Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very attractive styling | Not as comfortable or refined as German rivals |
| Ferocious performance from Quadrifoglio | Some owners report electrical gremlins |
| Emotional appeal of the Alfa badge | No estate version |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a leftfield choice in the compact executive saloon segment, offering distinctive Italian styling and emotional appeal that sets it apart from the usual Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class crowd. Whilst the interior quality and build standards don't quite match German rivals, the imaginatively designed dashboard, excellent driving position and generous interior space provide genuine appeal. The 2019 facelift brought significant improvements, including a superior 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a new 7.0-inch TFT instrument cluster (later upgraded to 12.3 inches).
The Giulia delivers an engaging driving experience with super-quick steering and impressive grip, though it's less refined than German competitors on UK roads due to firm suspension and higher wind and road noise. Engine options range from efficient 2.2-litre diesels (158bhp and 187bhp) and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrols (197bhp and 276bhp) to the utterly bonkers 503bhp Quadrifoglio. All models feature a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Running costs are reasonable, with diesels achieving over 50mpg and petrol models returning mid-30s mpg. The Giulia offers incredible value as a used purchase, combining performance, economy and an engaging soundtrack.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and emotional appeal, those wanting to stand out from the German saloon crowd, and drivers who value engaging performance and excellent value for money.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum comfort and refinement, buyers needing an estate option, or drivers concerned about potential electrical issues.

The Verdict
You should buy the Giulia if: You seek distinctive styling and emotional appeal, want to stand out from the German saloon crowd, or value engaging performance and excellent value for money.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum comfort and refinement, need an estate option, or are concerned about potential electrical issues.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compelling alternative to German rivals, offering greater emotional appeal and value despite slightly lower comfort and refinement levels. Whilst the BMW 3 Series edges ahead on expert rating and the Audi A4 leads on user satisfaction, the Giulia's distinctive styling, engaging driving dynamics and ferocious Quadrifoglio variant make it an intoxicating choice for those willing to embrace its Italian character. It feels greater than the sum of its parts, delivering an imaginatively designed interior, generous space and an excellent mix of performance and economy. For buyers seeking something different from the predictable German establishment, the Giulia represents remarkable value.
