BMW 3 Series (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharp steering and agile handling | Sporty suspension makes for a firm ride |
| Fuel-sipping diesels and plug-in hybrid | Not as roomy as some cheaper mainstream rivals |
| Beautifully finished cabin | Restricted engine choice if you want a manual gearbox |
Quick Summary
The BMW 3 Series (2019-present) is the benchmark for mid-size, sporty, executive saloons, combining understated style, rock-solid quality, and an upmarket image. This generation delivers an involving driving experience with crisp, precise steering and stiff suspension that provides excellent grip and traction. The beautifully finished cabin features plush materials and exceptional fit and finish, whilst the boot offers 480 litres of space (375 litres for the 330e plug-in hybrid). A practical Touring estate version is also available for those needing extra capacity.
The 3 Series excels dynamically, though the firm suspension can result in a brittle ride on rougher surfaces—adaptive suspension on M Sport Plus models mitigates this. Engine options are extensive on the used market, ranging from the efficient 318d diesel to the powerful M340i petrol, with the 330e plug-in hybrid offering up to 63 miles of electric-only range and real-world fuel economy around 65mpg when regularly charged. The 2022 facelift introduced a modern curved display combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment screen, though earlier models feature an 8.8 or 10.25-inch screen with the intuitive iDrive rotary controller. Servicing costs are reasonable at £25 monthly, and all engines feature timing chains, reducing long-term maintenance expenses.
Best for: Drivers seeking a sporty yet practical executive saloon with excellent handling, those wanting efficient diesel or plug-in hybrid options, and buyers prioritising premium cabin quality and driving engagement.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space over sportiness, drivers seeking a softer ride without adaptive suspension, or buyers wanting manual gearbox options across the range.

The Verdict
You should buy the 3 Series if: You're seeking a sporty yet practical executive saloon with excellent handling, want efficient diesel or plug-in hybrid options, or prioritise premium cabin quality and driving engagement.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space over sportiness, prefer a softer ride without adaptive suspension, or require manual gearbox options across the range.
Competitive Position: The BMW 3 Series (2019-present) remains the benchmark in the executive saloon segment, delivering superior driving dynamics and handling compared to its rivals. Whilst the firm suspension may compromise comfort on rougher roads, the beautifully finished cabin, extensive engine options, and impressive efficiency—particularly with the plug-in hybrid—make it the most complete package. The Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offer comparable quality and features, but the 3 Series edges ahead with its sharper steering and more engaging driving experience. The Jaguar XE provides an alternative with similar appeal but less established reliability credentials. For drivers prioritising dynamic handling and premium quality, the 3 Series is the standout choice.

The BMW 3 Series is consistently praised for its excellent performance, handling, and comfort features across all model years. Drivers enjoy the sporty driving experience, stylish design, and well-appointed interiors. However, some owners express concerns about repair costs and the varying levels of luxury depending on options and models. While many appreciate the reliability, others note issues with electronics and the use of plastic parts in certain areas.

What people say
Perfect with a good spec, lovely and really smooth to drive.
Great car, wouldve liked leather seats but other than that, I cant fault it
Loved every feature....not 1 problem reliable car. Would get one again.
It very depends on the options fitted in terms of features as they are all different. The stereo isnt the best as I dont have the HK stereo, and the interface isnt as good as my Golf. It isnt as luxurious as my wifes E Class either. but what it does have , is the feeling of being connected as one to the road. The engines excellent and its very rewarding to drive if you enjoy doing just that. Love it
Great car but Too much plastic in core engine components. Expensive to repair if the ever is an issue.
