Replaced a 2013 X3 and this motor is more maneuverable and nippy, but does not have the same presence on the road. We have reduced from two cars and my wife is happy with this too. I think a qualified positive, but we shall see.

BMW X1 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Beautifully appointed interior | Ride slightly firmer than some rivals |
| Brilliant on space and practicality | Higher-end models are expensive |
| Pleasant to drive | Too much desirable kit costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW X1 is the third-generation entry-level SUV in BMW's lineup, measuring 4.5 metres long and offering impressive space and versatility. With a 540-litre boot and flexible rear seating that slides, reclines and folds in a 40/20/40 split, it's exceptionally practical for families. The interior is beautifully appointed with plush materials, excellent perceived build quality and a clean, modern design. A broad range of powertrains includes mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids with up to 56 miles of electric range, and a fully electric iX1 variant. All models come with an automatic transmission as standard.
The BMW X1 feels satisfyingly confident on the road with good handling and a sporty edge, though the suspension can feel slightly firm at low speeds compared to some rivals. Engine options range from the punchy 168bhp sDrive20i to the performance-focused 296bhp M35i xDrive. The plug-in hybrid models are particularly desirable, offering near-silent electric running and seamless petrol engine integration. Running costs are competitive, with excellent fuel economy and CO2 emissions across the range. However, many desirable features such as heated seats, keyless entry and adaptive headlights are only available in pricey option packs.
Best for: Families seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, those wanting multiple powertrain options including plug-in hybrid and electric variants, and drivers prioritising a refined, well-appointed interior.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the most comfortable ride in the class, or buyers wanting all premium features included as standard rather than as costly options.

| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 35.2% | 4.5/5 |

| Volvo XC40 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.6% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the X1 if: You're seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, want multiple powertrain options including plug-in hybrid and electric variants, or prioritise a refined, well-appointed interior.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking the most comfortable ride in the class, or want all premium features included as standard rather than as costly options.
Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is one of the best all-rounders in the competitive compact SUV class. It offers satisfying driving dynamics, exceptional roominess and practicality, and one of the classiest interiors available. The generous electric-only range of plug-in hybrid models is particularly desirable. Whilst the Volvo XC40 edges ahead on user ratings and the Mercedes-Benz GLA offers slightly better value, the X1 combines premium quality, versatile powertrains and practical design to deliver a compelling package for families seeking a refined, capable SUV.
