BMW X1 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Beautifully appointed interior | Ride slightly firmer than some rivals |
| Brilliant on space and practicality | Higher-end models are expensive |
| Pleasant to drive | Too much desirable kit costs extra |
Quick Summary
The BMW X1 is the third-generation entry-level SUV in BMW's lineup, measuring 4.5 metres long and offering impressive space and versatility. With a 540-litre boot and flexible rear seating that slides, reclines and folds in a 40/20/40 split, it's exceptionally practical for families. The interior is beautifully appointed with plush materials, excellent perceived build quality and a clean, modern design. A broad range of powertrains is available, including mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids with up to 56 miles of electric range, and a fully electric iX1 variant.
The BMW X1 feels satisfyingly confident on the road with good handling and a sporty edge, though the ride can be slightly firmer than some rivals. The petrol xDrive23i is particularly punchy and flexible for everyday driving, whilst the plug-in hybrids offer sophisticated performance and impressive efficiency. Running costs are competitive, with servicing around £900–£1,000 for three years. However, higher-end models and desirable features like heated steering wheels and adaptive suspension come at a premium, making specification choices important for value.
Best for: Families seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, those wanting multiple powertrain options including plug-in hybrid or electric, and drivers prioritising a refined, well-appointed interior.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most comfortable ride in the class, those wanting to avoid option pack costs, or those prioritising the lowest purchase price in the compact SUV segment.

The Verdict
You should buy the X1 if: You're seeking a premium, spacious SUV with excellent practicality, want multiple powertrain options including plug-in hybrid or electric, or prioritise a refined, well-appointed interior.
Consider alternatives if: You want the most comfortable ride in the class, wish to avoid option pack costs, or are prioritising the lowest purchase price in the compact SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is one of the strongest all-rounders in the compact SUV class, offering exceptional space, practicality and a beautifully appointed interior. Whilst rivals like the Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz GLA match it on user ratings, the X1 edges ahead with superior practicality and a broader powertrain range. The Audi Q3 is slightly less favoured by users. However, the X1's higher-end models and extensive option packs mean it can become expensive compared to rivals, and the ride is slightly firmer than some competitors. For families wanting premium quality, space and versatility, the X1 represents excellent value in the segment.

4.5 Overall rating
(14 reviews)A very great small suv. fantastic car, cant fault it .
Some good features included but missing heated seats, reversing camera, front sensors just to name but a few.
Think the car is in very good condition inside and out maybe a little bit pricey but all in all a very nice car
Lovely car, couple of marks but nothing major. Car doesn’t have electric wing mirrors but good price for low mileage.
This is my favourite car! I like that it is a small SUV, loads of power and a smooth ride.
