Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling on a supermini platform. Launched as the cheapest new car in the UK, it combines rugged aesthetics with practical space, offering a 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with rear seats folded) that outperforms rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active and Suzuki Ignis. The raised ride height and body cladding create an appealing SUV look without the premium price tag, accounting for around 70% of Sandero sales. Available with a choice of engines—the responsive 0.9-litre TCe 90 turbo petrol, a 1.5-litre diesel, or a later 1.0-litre petrol—it offers flexibility for different driving needs.
As a used buy, the Stepway represents excellent value, combining affordability with low running costs and straightforward maintenance. The TCe 90 petrol achieves around 45mpg, whilst diesel variants deliver approximately 50mpg or more. Insurance groups range from 3 to 9, and servicing is inexpensive with 12,000-mile intervals. Whilst it won't match the Ford Fiesta Active for driving refinement or the Seat Arona for sophistication, the Stepway excels as a practical, cheap-to-run runabout with distinctive styling. It's an honest car that delivers on its promise of accessible crossover ownership without compromise.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling, families needing practical space, and those prioritising low running costs over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting premium refinement, engaging handling comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, or genuine off-road capability (no 4x4 available).

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero Stepway | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 36.1% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a tight budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, or prioritising practicality and low running costs over driving refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, premium interior quality, or genuine off-road capability with 4x4 traction.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a strong value proposition in the budget crossover segment, offering distinctive rugged styling and practical space at an unbeatable price. Whilst the Ford Fiesta Active provides superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai i20 Active delivers better overall refinement, the Stepway excels for budget-conscious buyers who understand its limitations. It's an honest, straightforward car that prioritises affordability and practicality over sophistication. For those seeking accessible crossover ownership without compromise, the Stepway remains an excellent choice, particularly with the efficient TCe 90 petrol or diesel engines.

(10 reviews)Enjoying the car. Still finding my way around it - many more functions than I had expected (handsfree mobile!) cannot yet sort the radio properly but very happy with it
Lovely to drive, lots of room and cheap to run, big boot. A brilliant car for familys. You cant compare it to anything else as theres nothing out there thats as big and cheap to run
The car is very comfy and easy to drive. Good size boot, satnav, electric windows at the back, The car is good value for money. First time owner of a Stepway.
Its good that most of the cars have sat nav but not all of them, witch would be a great idea, very help full for a lot of drivers,
I switched from a diesel Kia Soul to a petrol Dacia Sandero Stepway. I chose this car because of the roomy boot and ride height, features Id had in the Kia. I was slightly worried about losing some of the luxuries Id had, but came to the conclusion that fewer bits means fewer bits to break! Having to use the key to open the boot is a bit of a pain; not being able to fold wing mirrors in is something I miss in car parks, and not being able to adjust seat height means Im sitting on a cushion to see over the wheel. I chose this particular car over others for sale at the time because it has rear parking sensors, something not all models have, and I felt it would be a mistake to go without after so many years of having them. Its a basic car, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Overall, Im finding it easy to drive and looking forward to much better fuel economy than my previous car.
