Fiat 500L (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Versatile and practical cabin | Basic standard of finish |
| Available with five or seven seats | Poor real-world economy of TwinAir models |
| Cheap used car prices | Not at all sporty to drive |
Quick Summary
The Fiat 500L (2013-present) is a versatile and practical compact MPV that offers surprising interior space despite its modest external dimensions. With an upright cabin design, generous headroom and legroom in the front seats, and large side windows, it provides an airy feel. The standard 500L offers around average boot space for an MPV, whilst the stretched MPW version seats seven and combines generous interior space with a manageable external footprint. The cabin features body-coloured plastics and chunky switches, which are practical and wipe-clean, though some may find them basic.
The 500L delivers a comfortable, cushy ride with soft springs and long-travel suspension that absorbs bumps effectively. The steering is lightly weighted but slow, helping reduce body roll and keeping passengers comfortable. It achieved a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating with six airbags and standard stability systems. Engine options include the economical 1.3-litre Multijet diesel (up to 70.6mpg), smooth 1.4-litre petrol units, and the less impressive TwinAir two-cylinder. Residual values are weak, making low-mileage pre-owned models affordable. With five or seven-seat configurations and available Cross or Trekking variants with elevated ground clearance, the 500L is one of the most versatile compact MPVs available.
Best for: Families seeking practical, affordable space; buyers wanting five or seven-seat flexibility; those prioritising comfort over sporty handling; and budget-conscious buyers seeking low-mileage used models.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting premium cabin materials or sporty driving dynamics; those seeking strong residual values; or buyers considering TwinAir models for fuel economy.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat 500L | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.4% | 4.1/5 |
| Ford B-Max | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Citroen C3 Picasso | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 55.9% | 4.2/5 |
| Kia Venga | 2/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.5% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 500L if: You're seeking practical, affordable space; want five or seven-seat flexibility; prioritise comfort over sporty handling; or are a budget-conscious buyer looking for low-mileage used models.
Consider alternatives if: You desire premium cabin materials, sporty driving dynamics, strong residual values, or are considering TwinAir models for fuel economy.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500L is a strong contender in the compact MPV segment, offering excellent versatility and practicality at affordable used prices. Whilst the Ford B-Max scores higher for expert rating and the Citroen C3 Picasso offers better value deals, the 500L delivers impressive user satisfaction and flexible seating options. It outperforms the Kia Venga in expert rating and provides more character than its rivals. The 500L's weak residual values work in the buyer's favour when purchasing used, making it an excellent choice for families prioritising space and comfort over premium finishes or driving excitement.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Great car. Looks good. Tons of space in back. Roomier than most small hatchbacks and has cruise control.
If you want a lot of car for not a lot of money then look no further! We have 2 of these (we love them so much). Firstly the engine; a 1.6 multi jet diesel with fantastic punch, smooth execution and pretty quiet on the ears too! Both ours are ‘Lounge’ spec so they’re well equipped too. We have both the standard 500L and the MPW.. both are spacious and comfortable (though I do miss an arm rest on the driver’s seat, considering this is the highest model and that technically, they’re MPVs I’d have expected an arm rest. In the 500L you get parking sensors, multimedia touch screen player with USB connectors and Bluetooth, electric windows & door mirrors, hill start and ABS, city steering , tyre pressure monitors, stop start and a full pan glass roof. The MPW is virtually the same but the roof is upgraded to a glass sunroof (both models have an electric blind). The MPW also has 2 extra seats that fold in the boot (suitable for kids up to about 8 years old and that’s about it!).. the boot space is however, cavernous! Plenty of power in these cars, we even pull our folding camper with the MPW). Highly recommended!
I like that it looks different to other similar cars but read that the automatic gear is not very good so put me off.
Lovely car lots room, nice drive and vary comfortable.
