Fiat 500X (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive looks | Not the roomiest or most practical compact SUV |
| Much improved drive from 2018 onwards | Older examples are starting to feel their age |
| Lots of scope for personalisation | Shorter new car warranty than some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is a retro-styled compact SUV that offers distinctive charm and practical appeal. Introduced to the UK market in 2015, it shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade and provides a stylish alternative to rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Skoda Yeti. Standard equipment has always been generous, with features including air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows and height-adjustable driver's seats across the range. A major update in late 2018 significantly boosted its appeal, introducing new engines, a dual-clutch transmission option, improved styling and modern technology that brought it back on par with competitors.
The 500X comfortably seats four adults with useful storage bins throughout its stylishly-appointed interior, though the 350-litre boot is smaller than many rivals in its class. Early 1.6-litre petrol models achieve around 44-48mpg, whilst the newer 1.5-litre mild hybrid variant is similarly efficient. Running costs are reasonable, with modest servicing expenses and decent equipment levels across all trim levels. However, the Fiat may not hold its value as well as more highly regarded alternatives, and older examples are beginning to feel dated compared to newer competitors with superior handling and more modern technology.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and retro charm, those wanting a practical compact SUV with generous standard equipment, and drivers looking for a fuss-free, characterful alternative to mainstream rivals.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space, superior handling dynamics, or the latest technology, and buyers concerned about long-term depreciation and resale value.

The Verdict
You should buy the 500X if: You value distinctive styling and retro charm, seek a practical compact SUV with generous standard equipment, or want a characterful alternative to mainstream rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, superior handling dynamics, the latest technology, or are concerned about depreciation and resale value.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500X (2014-present) is an interesting proposition in the competitive compact SUV market, offering distinctive looks and a practical, fuss-free nature. The 2018 update significantly improved its appeal with new engines, better technology and enhanced driving dynamics. However, rivals such as the Seat Arona offer superior handling, more refined driving experiences and better long-term value retention. The Nissan Juke and Jeep Renegade provide alternative styling options, though neither consistently outperforms the Fiat across all metrics. For buyers seeking something with character and willing to accept slightly higher depreciation, the 500X remains a compelling choice, particularly when purchasing discounted examples or used models a few years old.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)They’re great little SUVs although much more space inside than you’d expect. Perky petrol engines and economical diesels, a joy to drive.
Great car! So much more powerful and responsive than the Fiat 500 Pop. Its missing a CD player (Im aging myself) and heated seats, but otherwise fantastic car!
fully equipped and easy to get in and out of if you are getting, but also has street cred
