Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordable to buy and cheap to run | Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals |
| 4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers | The Panda isn't very well equipped |
| Cute and distinctive looks | Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta |
Quick Summary
The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up. Now in its third generation, it's an honest and unpretentious car with considerable charm and character. The Panda offers surprising practicality for its size, with a clever rear-seat sliding system that allows you to trade passenger legroom for additional boot space. Three adults can sit abreast in the back, and the rear seats fold with a 60/40 split for added flexibility.
However, the Panda suffers from significant safety concerns, scoring zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018 and earning only 17% for child occupancy safety. Running costs are low, with most variants averaging around 50mpg, and servicing is straightforward. The range includes practical 4x4 variants, an uncommon combination in this class. Whilst the Panda may be flawed in areas, its affordability, charm, and practicality make it appealing to budget-conscious buyers seeking a frugal and functional runabout.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, practical city car; those wanting all-wheel-drive in a compact package; drivers prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Families regularly carrying children; buyers prioritising modern safety features; those seeking engaging driving dynamics or comprehensive equipment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 31.9% | 4.0/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Panda if: You're budget-conscious and seeking an affordable, practical city car; you want all-wheel-drive in a compact package; you prioritise low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You regularly carry children, prioritise modern safety features, or seek engaging driving dynamics and comprehensive equipment.
Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is an affordable and characterful choice in the city car segment, offering distinctive looks and practical 4x4 variants unavailable elsewhere. However, it's increasingly difficult to recommend given that most conventional city cars are better equipped, safer, and more engaging to drive. The Kia Picanto offers superior user ratings and better value, whilst the Volkswagen Up provides superior safety credentials. For those prioritising safety and competence, alternatives such as the Hyundai i10 or used Volkswagen Up would prove more sensible choices, though the Panda's charm and affordability appeal to those seeking character alongside practicality.

4.4 Overall rating
(9 reviews)its a great little car every thing works, its great value for money and has no gimmicks, great car to drive . everything in the right place. and a car like this stands on its own,
Clear touch controls for phone, radio etc. Start/stop function and 6 speed gears makes for economic driving.
Lovely car ..nippy quiet and well equipped, but not too complicated. Ideal for a little runaround.
A cracking little motor. Basic but for the price is just what I wanted. Has most of the toys one would like in a car. Just a couple missing. Sat nav. Dab. But for the price I can live without. Drives very well. Good mpg.
Slightly underpowered, it needs an overdrive. Also needs a better coating of paint. Otherwise not a bad little car.
