Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable for long-distance driving | Not as sharp to drive as most Fords |
| Very spacious cabin and boot | Earlier engines are less efficient than later units |
| Lots of kit as standard | Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels |
Quick Summary
The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is Ford's flagship SUV, offering more space and equipment than premium rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 at a significantly lower price point. Originally intended for the North American market, it was introduced to the UK in 2016 but struggled for sales, leading to discontinuation at the end of 2019. Despite this, it remains an excellent value proposition, delivering an imposing presence on the road with a cavernous interior featuring exceptional leg, headroom, and shoulder room. The 602-litre boot expands to 1,688 litres with the rear seats folded, whilst thoughtful touches like padded rear seat belts and extensive storage compartments enhance practicality.
The Edge excels as a refined long-distance cruiser, with smooth diesel engines and responsive gearboxes that prioritise comfort over dynamism. All versions come well-equipped with dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, parking sensors, and a rearview camera as standard. Later models benefit from an eight-speed automatic gearbox, matrix LED headlights, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. Fuel economy reaches up to 42.4mpg on official figures, whilst servicing costs are competitive through Ford's dealer network. As a used purchase at the right price point, the Edge represents exceptional value for families seeking spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped transport.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV; long-distance drivers prioritising refinement and ease of use; and budget-conscious buyers wanting premium-level space without the premium badge price tag.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking sharp handling or driving dynamism; those concerned about rapid depreciation; or buyers requiring maximum fuel efficiency in a large SUV.

| Ford Edge | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 34.5% | 4.3/5 |

| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.5/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Edge if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV; prioritising long-distance refinement and ease of use; or wanting premium-level space without the premium badge price tag.
Consider alternatives if: You desire sharp handling or driving dynamism, are concerned about rapid depreciation, or require maximum fuel efficiency in a large SUV.
Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) stands out in the premium SUV segment by delivering exceptional space and equipment at a significantly lower cost than German rivals. Whilst the BMW X3 offers superior driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Touareg boasts the highest user satisfaction, the Edge provides outstanding value for families prioritising comfort, practicality, and long-distance refinement. Its rapid depreciation means savvy buyers can acquire a well-equipped, spacious family SUV at a fraction of its original price, making it an excellent choice for those willing to overlook its less dynamic handling characteristics in favour of genuine usability and comfort.

The Ford Edge has garnered positive feedback for its comfort, especially with features like heated leather seats and a quality sound system. Many drivers appreciate its spacious interior and overall performance. However, some have noted challenges with maneuvering, particularly due to its turning circle. Overall, the Edge is viewed as a stylish and practical choice for drivers seeking a larger vehicle that handles well.

What people say
Not sure why there aren't more of these on the road, 4wd, good size, economical, nice style and extremely comfortable.
Very pleased , a nice car , worth a go , loads of spec
On researching the ford edge I found it’s not got a very good full turning circle. I live in very winding lanes and need to turn around in the road slot so it won’t be for me. Shame because it looked very good from the advert
Having run a 2016 Edge Titanium 2.0 auto with Luxury Pack (full leather, panoramic roof, heated/cooled seats, etc.,) for over 5 1/2 years, I wanted to update the model knowing that Ford stopped selling them in the U.K in 2019. The ST-Line model purchased is very similarly specified to the Titanium which means a high level - with additional ‘bells and whistles’ such as blind spot indicators, B&O sound system, front camera (in addition to rear reversing camera), different transmission, etc, etc; in other words, a lot of car for your money and comparable with cars carrying a premium badge. Styling has been upgraded with some real changes (improvements) to body styling with a grea5 paint finish. The Edge is a large car but handles well and relatively economical. I suspect the Eco-blue engine may not be as frugal as the ‘old’ TDi but it’s better for the environment. This model is still available in the U.S. -what a pity they’re not bringing them over here.
Great car. Lovely to drive with plenty of gadgets.
