Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordably priced as a used car | Interior feels dated |
| Engaging to drive and comfortable to travel in | Not as roomy as a Skoda Superb |
| Wide choice of engines | Hybrid model isn't as economical as rivals |
Quick Summary
The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) is a spacious and practical large family car that delivers engaging driving dynamics combined with a comfortable, cosseting ride. Available as a five-door hatchback, estate, four-door saloon, or hybrid variant, it offers impressive boot space and a well-appointed interior with logical layout and easy-to-use infotainment. The hatchback provides 654 litres of boot space (1,446 litres with seats folded), whilst the estate delivers 755 litres (1,630 litres folded). A wide range of EcoBoost petrol and Duratorq diesel engines were offered, alongside an economical hybrid option, providing flexibility for different driving needs and budgets.
Running costs are competitive, with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel achieving up to 56.5mpg and low emissions, whilst the hybrid offers the cleanest option at just 94g/km CO2. The Mondeo is straightforward to maintain thanks to Ford's extensive dealer network and prevalence of independent garages, with insurance groups comparable to rivals. As a used purchase, it represents excellent value, particularly with the right engine and specification. However, the interior has aged noticeably, and it lacks the roominess of the Skoda Superb or the sharp handling of the Mazda 6.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, practical family car with engaging driving dynamics, low running costs, and a wide choice of powertrains.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium interior quality, maximum interior space, or the finest handling characteristics, or buyers seeking the latest infotainment technology.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mondeo if: You're seeking an affordable, spacious, and practical family car with engaging driving dynamics, low running costs, and a wide choice of powertrains.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, maximum interior space, the finest handling characteristics, or the latest infotainment technology.
Competitive Position: The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) is a strong contender in the large family car segment, offering excellent value as a used purchase with engaging driving dynamics and practical versatility. Whilst the Skoda Superb edges ahead with superior roominess and the Volkswagen Passat offers a more upmarket feel, the Mondeo's affordability, wide engine choice, and comfortable ride make it a highly sensible option for budget-conscious buyers. The Vauxhall Insignia lags behind in user satisfaction, making the Mondeo a more reliable choice in this competitive market.

What people say
The car would be great value it runs smoothly and for the time I had it it was comfortable to drive
Very good car for what it is reliable and comfortable plus better then german rivals cheap er to fix.
Car is exactly as required but I feel it is overpriced
Overpriced. Not as good condition as described. Parts missing, Underpowered
Really liked the features on this Mondeo and having owned similar but older models I am impressed. Especially liked the fact that there is a tow bar already in place. The interior trim/seats and tech are an upgrade to my current model.
