Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordably priced as a used car | Interior feels dated |
| Engaging to drive and comfortable to travel in | Not as roomy as a Skoda Superb |
| Wide choice of engines | Hybrid model isn't as economical as rivals |
Quick Summary
The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) is a spacious and practical large family car that delivers a plush, cosseting ride and engaging driving dynamics. Available as a five-door hatchback, estate, four-door saloon, or hybrid estate, it offers impressive boot space and generous head and legroom for all occupants. The hatchback provides 654 litres of boot capacity, expanding to 1,446 litres with rear seats folded, whilst the estate delivers 755 litres and 1,630 litres respectively. A wide range of EcoBoost petrol and Duratorq diesel engines were offered, alongside an economical hybrid option. The interior is uncomplicated and logically laid out, though materials lack the lustre of premium rivals.
The Mondeo handles well for its size, with responsive steering and a well-balanced chassis, though it lacks the dynamic finesse of smaller Ford models like the Focus and Fiesta. Running costs are reasonable, with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel achieving up to 56.5mpg and low emissions. The hybrid is the cleanest option, emitting just 94g/km of CO2, making it attractive to company car drivers. As a used purchase, the Mondeo represents excellent value, offering practicality, comfort, and straightforward ownership without excessive maintenance costs. Ford's extensive dealer network and the car's prevalence mean servicing is readily available and affordable.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable family car, those prioritising practicality and low running costs, and drivers wanting engaging handling combined with a smooth ride.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking premium interior quality, maximum roominess (compared to a Skoda Superb), or those requiring the most economical hybrid option available.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mondeo if: You're seeking an affordable, spacious family car with engaging handling, low running costs, and straightforward ownership without premium pricing.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior roominess, premium interior quality, or require the most economical hybrid option available.
Competitive Position: The Ford Mondeo Mk4 (2014-2022) is a strong contender in the large family car market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst the Skoda Superb edges ahead with superior roominess and a higher overall rating, the Mondeo's engaging driving dynamics, comfortable ride, and affordable pricing make it an attractive alternative. It outperforms the Vauxhall Insignia in expert ratings and overall appeal, and matches the Volkswagen Passat across most metrics. For budget-conscious buyers wanting a capable, comfortable, and practical large family car, the Mondeo remains a sensible choice, particularly in the used market where its accessible pricing makes it easier to overlook its dated interior.

What people say
The car would be great value it runs smoothly and for the time I had it it was comfortable to drive
Very good car for what it is reliable and comfortable plus better then german rivals cheap er to fix.
Car is exactly as required but I feel it is overpriced
Really liked the features on this Mondeo and having owned similar but older models I am impressed. Especially liked the fact that there is a tow bar already in place. The interior trim/seats and tech are an upgrade to my current model.
Great all round family sized car with a huge boot. 2.0tdi is awesome, especially if you need to tow a trailer/caravan. Make sure the cam belt has been replaced on high milers, also check the ac is working. Ive owned 4 over the years, all diesels and never let me down.
