The Isuzu is very reliable but it tends to have steering and suspension problems with age. Comparable pickups are the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.

It’s the ideal compromise for me between farming and construction delivering comfort and power for towing. The only thing I don’t like is the fact I have to disable the lane support every time I start.

Base model but does what it Says on the tin, real work horse with few frills. Great towing ability.

Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A truly capable workhorse | The single-cab Utility model has a lower towing limit than the rest of the range |
| Plenty of creature comforts for lifestyle customers | Expect high fuel bills compared with an SUV's |
| Excellent safety rating | Expensive to insure |
Quick Summary
The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a third-generation pickup truck that combines genuine utility with lifestyle appeal. Available in three body styles—single cab, extended cab, and double cab—it offers flexibility for both working professionals and weekend adventurers. The cabin is more car-like than previous generations, featuring soft-touch plastics, snug seats with extensive adjustment, and touchscreen infotainment systems on higher trims. All models are powered by a 1.9-litre diesel engine producing 162bhp, available with manual or automatic transmissions, delivering decent low-down grunt and impressive agility for a truck.
The D-Max drives remarkably well for a pickup, with well-weighted steering and composed handling that belies its workhorse credentials. Four-wheel drive models (all except the entry-level Utility) offer serious off-road capability, including hill descent control and 800mm wading depth. Trim levels range from purely utilitarian Utility models to the lifestyle-focused V-Cross, with the mid-range DL20 and DL40 offering the best balance of features and value. Running costs are reasonable for a truck, with official fuel economy between 30.7 and 33.6mpg, fixed VED at £265 annually, and attractive company car tax rates if employer-provided. However, insurance sits in the maximum group 50D, and fuel bills will be higher than comparable SUVs.
Best for: Working professionals seeking a capable workhorse, lifestyle buyers wanting weekend adventure capability, and those needing flexible load-carrying with modern creature comforts.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising fuel economy, those sensitive to diesel engine noise, or those seeking lower insurance premiums.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Isuzu D-Max | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota Hilux | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Ranger | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 28.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Mitsubishi L200 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the D-Max if: You need a capable workhorse with modern comforts, seek flexible load-carrying for work and leisure, or want genuine off-road capability at a reasonable price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy, prefer petrol engines, or are sensitive to diesel noise and high insurance costs.
Competitive Position: The Isuzu D-Max (2021-present) is a strong contender in the pickup market, offering excellent value and versatility. With a dwindling choice of competitors following the withdrawal of Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mercedes-Benz from the UK market, the D-Max benefits from reduced competition. It matches the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger on expert and overall ratings, whilst offering more creature comforts than the Ford and better value than the Toyota. The improved quality and features of this generation suggest strong residual values. For buyers seeking a genuine workhorse with lifestyle appeal, the D-Max represents a compelling choice.
