Jaguar I-Pace (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the very best EVs to drive | Disappointing real-world range |
| Combines speed with refinement | Doesn't charge as quickly as some rivals |
| Rock-bottom tax bills for company drivers | Firm ride on biggest wheels |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar I-Pace is a milestone electric vehicle that proved EVs can be thrilling to drive and genuinely desirable. Launched in 2018, this premium electric SUV combines 396bhp with permanent four-wheel drive, delivering 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. With an official WLTP range of 292 miles, real-world performance varies between 180-250 miles depending on conditions and driving style. Charging from a 7kW home wall box takes around 14 hours, whilst 50kW rapid chargers add 100 miles in 45 minutes to an hour. The I-Pace offers a sublime driving experience with excellent refinement, making it one of the finest sports SUVs available, electric or otherwise.
Practicality is adequate rather than exceptional, with a 577-litre boot and comfortable seating for four adults, though rear legroom trails some rivals. Three trim levels—S, SE and HSE—are available, with SE offering the best value proposition. Running costs are competitive, with electricity at approximately 9-13p per mile from home charging, plus zero Vehicle Excise Duty and exemption from premium car tax. Servicing is required every two years or 21,000 miles at £1,000 for three years. Depreciation is reasonable for an EV, and the I-Pace holds value well after initial losses.
Best for: Drivers seeking an exhilarating electric sports SUV with premium refinement, company car users benefiting from tax advantages, and those prioritising driving dynamics over maximum practicality.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum real-world range, those needing rapid public charging as standard, or those seeking the largest rear passenger space in the premium EV segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar I-Pace | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.9% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the I-Pace if: You're seeking an exhilarating electric sports SUV with premium refinement, a company car user benefiting from tax advantages, or prioritising driving dynamics over maximum practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum real-world range, need rapid public charging as standard, or seek the largest rear passenger space in the premium EV segment.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar I-Pace stands out as the most engaging premium electric SUV to drive, outperforming rivals like the Audi E-Tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC in terms of driving dynamics and user satisfaction. Whilst the Tesla Model X offers greater practicality and the E-Tron provides faster charging, the I-Pace's combination of thrilling performance, refinement, and competitive running costs makes it the standout choice for drivers prioritising the driving experience. Its disappointing real-world range versus official figures and firm ride on larger wheels are notable drawbacks, but these don't diminish its status as a milestone electric vehicle that proves EVs can be genuinely desirable and thrilling to live with.

5 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Great build quality, exceptional ride, great performance! Plenty of space for a family car too
Super impressed with this car. The high end specification s the best of any car ive driven. I was not sure if electric was for me prior to my purchase. But I was a convert within minutes. Love this car.
iPace, beatiful, sleek, bold, comfortable and elegance all that a car enthusiast wants. Love the simplicity but classic high end EV. 10/10 all round wounder of the world.
Great value, great spec and very comfortable and great size inside both front and back
Expensive car but an enjoyable one. Nice to drive, comfortable in the front but perhaps a bit lacking in legroom for the rear seat passengers. Considering the cost, the HSE model could come with more fittings as standard.
