Jaguar XF (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the best executive saloons to drive | No hybrid model |
| Well equipped | Iffy reliability record |
| A more unusual alternative to its German rivals | Models with sports suspension have a crashy ride |
Quick Summary
The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a stylish large executive saloon that rivals the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This second-generation model, introduced in 2015 and facelifted in 2021, offers impressive handling and a sleek design. Available as a four-door saloon or five-door Sportbrake estate with rear- or all-wheel drive, the XF delivers excellent practicality with a 540-litre boot in the saloon and 1,700 litres in the Sportbrake. The interior is stylish, though materials don't quite match the Audi A6, and the infotainment system is less intuitive than German competitors.
The XF excels in driving dynamics with sharp, direct handling and three suspension options, including adaptive systems on higher trims. Diesel engines offer superior fuel economy, with the 2.0-litre D200 MHEV (204hp) providing an excellent balance of performance and efficiency. Petrol options include 200hp, 250hp, and 300hp variants. Running costs are reasonable for the class, particularly with diesel models compliant with RDE2 emissions standards. However, resale values lag behind German rivals, making used examples attractive purchases. The lack of a hybrid option and Jaguar's mixed reliability record are considerations, but the XF remains an exclusive, engaging alternative to mainstream executive cars.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, those wanting a more exclusive alternative to German brands, and buyers prioritising practicality and driving enjoyment.
Not ideal for: Those requiring hybrid or electric options, buyers concerned about reliability, or those seeking the lowest running costs in the executive segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XF | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.4% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW 5 Series | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.2% | 4.6/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi A6 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.4% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XF if: You seek a stylish, engaging executive saloon with excellent handling, want a more exclusive alternative to German brands, or prioritise practicality and driving enjoyment.
Consider alternatives if: You require hybrid or electric options, are concerned about reliability, or seek the lowest running costs in the executive segment.
Competitive Position: The Jaguar XF (2016-present) is a compelling choice in the executive saloon market, offering distinctive styling and superb driving dynamics that rival or exceed its German competitors. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on expert ratings and overall CarGurus scores, the XF matches it on user satisfaction and offers better value with a higher percentage of good deals available. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class boasts the highest user rating, but the XF's combination of exclusivity, handling prowess, and practicality makes it an excellent alternative for those seeking something different. The Audi A6 offers comparable ratings, yet the XF's more engaging driving experience and distinctive character provide a compelling reason to choose it over more conventional rivals.

What people say
High spec , extremely comfortable, everything is where you would expect it to be, and it just reeks of class. Lots of goodies for the tech fans but all straight forward so no problem for those of us less genned up. Why oh why did it take Jaguar so long to see the market for estate cars?
only 51k looks and drives like a dream brought my mechanic friend along and he could not find a single thing wrong with it.. he was amazed as he always does one happy bunny
Portfolio model is top spec, go for one with options like motion sensor boot opening and Meridian sound sysyem
