Kia Stonic (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Generous seven-year warranty | Most basic cars miss out on some safety systems |
| Lots of standard kit on all models | Firm ride won't suit everyone |
| Good to drive | Diesel particulate filters can clog if the car is only used for short journeys |
Quick Summary
The Kia Stonic is the Korean manufacturer's smallest SUV, launched in 2017 to compete with rivals such as the Seat Arona, Citroën C3 Aircross, and Skoda Kamiq. Built on the same mechanical platform as the Kia Rio hatchback, it offers a compact footprint with impressive build quality and a well-appointed cabin. The Stonic majors on styling and equipment, delivering a hatchback-like driving position that feels more engaging than typical SUVs. With a 352-litre boot and space for five occupants, it provides practical everyday usability, though rear headroom may be tight for taller passengers.
The Stonic is more competent and agile through corners than expected, resisting body roll whilst feeling taut and keen, though the firmer ride may not suit those prioritising comfort. Engine options include a 1.4-litre petrol with 98bhp, a punchier 1.0-litre turbo with 118bhp, and a 1.6-litre diesel with 108bhp. All models feature a five- or six-speed manual gearbox, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic available. Kia's customary seven-year warranty and strong reliability record provide excellent peace of mind, whilst low insurance groups and competitive servicing costs keep running expenses down.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, well-equipped compact SUV with impressive warranty coverage, those wanting good driving dynamics in a small package, and families prioritising reliability and value.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear headroom, drivers preferring a softer, more comfortable ride, or buyers needing comprehensive safety systems on entry-level models.

The Verdict
You should buy the Stonic if: You want a stylish, well-equipped compact SUV with impressive warranty coverage, seek good driving dynamics in a small package, or prioritise reliability and value for families.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear headroom, prefer a softer and more comfortable ride, or need comprehensive safety systems on entry-level models.
Competitive Position: The Kia Stonic is a very good all-rounder in the compact SUV segment, offering impressive levels of standard equipment, strong driving dynamics, and Kia's excellent seven-year warranty. Whilst the Skoda Kamiq edges ahead with a higher expert rating and overall CarGurus score, the Stonic delivers better value for money and superior user satisfaction. It outperforms the Citroën C3 Aircross on expert rating and offers more engaging driving than the Seat Arona, making it an excellent choice for buyers seeking a well-rounded compact SUV that doesn't compromise on practicality or enjoyment.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)The Kia Stonic 4 is well appointed and was good value for money. Ours could do with a sunroof. Similar to the Hyundai Koni.
Fully equipped, great build quality, excellent manufacturers warranty. Value for money.
If you are looking for a crossover or SUV then take a look at the Kia stonic, With seven year warranty and fantastic build quality its already leaves the competition behind.
Kia has a good reputation so we decided this model would suit our requirements. It has all the features you would like in a mild hybrid car. The value of second hand cars at the moment is high but we did look around and this was the best deal we could get. the only thing missing is automatic folding mirrors !!! .... We did look at several other makes and models, Renault Capture, MG ZS and Hyundai Kona.
