Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Immensely capable off road | Lots of reliability worries |
| Superbly comfortable on tarmac | High running costs demand deep pockets |
| Roomy and practical seven-seat cabin | Not as sharp to drive as the equivalent Audi or BMW |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016) is a versatile seven-seat SUV equally at home at a top-end restaurant or loaded with family and dogs on the motorway. It combines practicality, comfort, and off-road capability with understated affluence. The spacious interior features individually foldable rear seats and a split tailgate, making it exceptionally configurable for various cargo needs. On the road, the Discovery 4 delivers a smooth, comfortable ride with controlled handling and comprehensive safety equipment, though it prioritises comfort over sporty dynamics.
Running costs are substantial, with fuel consumption typically 25-30 mpg and high tax bands applying to most models. Timing belt replacement is a significant expense, costing four figures on the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre engines. Reliability concerns are a notable issue, with genuinely reliable examples becoming scarcer. However, independent Land Rover specialists offer more affordable servicing than franchised dealers. For those prepared to invest in thorough servicing and potential repairs, the Discovery 4 remains an exceptional all-rounder that rarely disappoints.
Best for: Families needing seven seats, those seeking a capable off-road vehicle with on-road comfort, and buyers wanting understated luxury and practicality combined.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers concerned about running costs and reliability, those prioritising sharp handling like an Audi Q7 or BMW X5, or drivers unwilling to invest in premium servicing and maintenance.

The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery 4 if: You need a seven-seat SUV combining practicality with off-road capability, seek understated luxury and comfort, and are prepared to invest in servicing and maintenance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling like a BMW X5, are concerned about reliability and running costs, or prefer a more budget-friendly option with lower maintenance expenses.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery 4 stands as a formidable contender in the premium seven-seat SUV market, offering unmatched practicality and off-road ability. Whilst the BMW X5 E70 delivers sharper handling and the Volvo XC90 provides Scandinavian refinement, the Discovery 4's combination of space, comfort, and capability is difficult to match. However, reliability concerns and substantial running costs mean it demands careful selection and committed ownership. For those willing to invest upfront and maintain it properly, the Discovery 4 remains an exceptional all-rounder.

What people say
This Car offers all the requirements for my family. Plenty of space for the growing children, plenty of space for all our ‘stuff’. Very safe and able to tow.
I would suggest you have to have some sort of need for a Discovery, I shoot. I understand that should you wish to make your whole life less meaningful and buy a caravan, they make excellent towing vehicles. They are an excellent mix of ruggedness and style, luxury and practicality, whilst being more ageless than more popular cars. Don’t buy one thinking you can run it for nothing, this is my second Discovery, they do absorb a fair bit of budget, only you can decide if the price is worth it.
Most important car has a full service history, this model is not fully loaded but from my experience with discovery’s more kit fitted, more to go wrong.hoping I’ve found a good one. This will be my 5th discovery over a 25 year period. Car looks very good.
Wonderful car let down by fragile build and huge costs to therefore maintain.
Having a discovery 4 is comfort and reliable 4x4 vehicle this a vehicle that has most comfort and excellent fuel mileage for a top 4x4 vehicle I just recommend you should drive one for yourself and see just how good these vehicles are and road handling to
