Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | Poor reliability record |
| Versatile and practical seven-seat cabin | Five-seat models are worth less than seven-seaters |
| Well judged ride and handling balance | The car's weight takes the edge off its performance |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014-present) is a versatile seven-seat SUV that replaced the ageing Freelander. When launched, its seven-seat configuration set it apart from premium rivals like BMW and Audi, which required buyers to upgrade to larger models for this feature. The Discovery Sport shares its underpinnings with the Range Rover Evoque and has been significantly improved following a facelift in late 2020. The updated interior features premium materials, a crisp touchscreen infotainment system, and intuitive controls. The driving position is commanding, the middle row is spacious with minimal spine hump, and the rearmost seats comfortably accommodate children. The rear bench slides to optimise boot space, and all three seats fold independently.
Off-road, the Discovery Sport delivers expected Land Rover capability, whilst on-road it excels with a well-judged balance of comfort and handling. The suspension smooths out bumps without excessive softness, and progressive steering provides confidence in corners. However, the car's weight requires substantial engine input for quick acceleration. Fuel economy ranges from 40-45mpg for the D150 front-wheel-drive model to around 30mpg for petrol variants. Servicing costs are comparable to BMW, though Land Rover offers fixed-price plans. All later engines use timing chains, ensuring longevity. The Discovery Sport's questionable reliability record is a notable concern, but its versatility, comfort, and well-rounded nature make it an excellent choice for those prepared to mitigate this risk with an extended warranty.
Best for: Families requiring seven seats, those seeking a versatile and practical SUV with premium feel, and buyers wanting off-road capability combined with on-road comfort.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising reliability above all else, buyers seeking maximum fuel economy, or those unwilling to invest in extended warranty protection.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace | 5/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.5% | 4.6/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.7% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Discovery Sport if: You need a seven-seat SUV with premium feel, seek versatility and practicality, or want off-road capability combined with on-road comfort.
Consider alternatives if: Reliability is your primary concern, you prioritise fuel economy, or you're unwilling to invest in extended warranty protection.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a well-rounded seven-seat SUV that competes strongly against premium rivals. Whilst the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and BMW X3 score higher on expert ratings, the Discovery Sport matches them on user satisfaction and overall CarGurus rating. Its key advantage is the standard seven-seat configuration and off-road capability, which rivals cannot match. However, its poor reliability record remains a significant drawback. For buyers prepared to mitigate this risk, the Discovery Sport offers exceptional versatility, comfort, and practicality that few competitors can equal.

Thanks to Car Guru I found the perfect Land Rover Discovery Spot with all the toys that I wanted. At the moment I drive a Nissan 4x4 with a higher driving position which I like . The Discovery Sport gives me the same feeling of a higher driving position. I just love the Discovery Sport.
