Still own a 2013 SD4 SE - Fantastic vehicle - more capable off road than you would believe and a pleasure to drive on road. SD is considerably more punchy than TD. Mine now on 130 000 miles have no intention of selling her - will pass her on to family and will look for a slightly younger one to replace her. Key is to maintain according to the recommendations - then problem free.

Having had 2 HSE models from 2007 to 2017 I found them to be excellent vehicles. I had no problems with them and they covered all the bases for my travel and passenger needs.

Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Drives well on the road and off it | Reliability is not a strong point |
| Reasonably practical cabin | Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks off-road ability |
| Very stable tow car | The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty |
Quick Summary
The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a compact SUV that combines on-road refinement with genuine off-road capability. Its smart, upmarket cabin comfortably seats four adults, though rear legroom is modest compared to rivals like the BMW X3. The 755-litre boot expands to 1,670 litres with rear seats folded, featuring a reversible waterproof cover ideal for muddy adventures. However, the boot is relatively narrow, making wider item loading tricky. The Freelander 2 operates with front-wheel drive in normal conditions, automatically distributing torque to the rear via a Haldex coupling as grip diminishes.
Engine options include a 229bhp 3.2-litre six-cylinder petrol (smooth but thirsty at 25mpg) and a popular 2.2-litre turbodiesel available in 158bhp TD4 or 187bhp SD4 guises. Post-2010 models feature improved torque and stop-start technology on manual diesels. The Freelander 2 is relaxing to drive with direct steering, comfortable ride, and reasonable pace on back roads, though it's not particularly agile. Trim levels range from entry-level S to luxurious HSE Lux, with equipment including climate control, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroofs, and premium Meridian hi-fi systems on higher specs. Reliability concerns warrant a pre-purchase inspection by a Land Rover specialist.
Best for: Buyers seeking year-round mobility, off-road capability, and towing prowess, with a preference for diesel engines and practical family transport.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum reliability, rear passenger space, or fuel economy with the petrol engine, or drivers requiring a narrower boot for wider items.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander 2 | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 20.7% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 F25 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.8% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You need year-round mobility, genuine off-road capability, and towing prowess, with a preference for practical family transport and diesel engines.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum reliability, superior rear passenger space, excellent fuel economy, or premium badge appeal over off-road ability.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) offers genuine off-road prowess and on-road refinement at a competitive price point. Whilst rivals like the BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 score higher for overall quality and user satisfaction, the Freelander 2 remains the only true off-road contender in this segment. Its lower expert rating reflects reliability concerns, but for buyers valuing adventure capability and towing stability over premium badge appeal, it represents excellent value. The Audi Q5 offers similar practicality with better reliability, making it a sensible alternative for those prioritising on-road performance.
