Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Superb build quality | Not as fuel-efficient as official figures suggest |
| Very unlikely to go wrong | Lots of road noise at speed |
| Comfortable and reasonably quiet if driven smoothly | Irritating infotainment system |
Quick Summary
The Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) is an overlooked premium compact SUV that deserves far more credit than it receives. Powered by a punchy 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a torque-rich electric motor, this self-charging hybrid delivers all-wheel drive via a smooth CVT automatic transmission. The NX offers precision engineering, comprehensive standard equipment, and a stellar reliability record that rivals any German competitor. Whilst the styling may not appeal to everyone and interior space is somewhat restrictive, the car excels in comfort and refinement when driven considerately.
Running costs are more affordable than expected, with realistic fuel economy around the mid-thirties mpg and low CO2 emissions of 121g/km. Annual servicing includes a comprehensive hybrid system health check with warranty extensions available. Insurance groupings are steep at group 32 for the 300h, but residual values remain encouragingly strong. The infotainment system is frustratingly eccentric and the driving position somewhat skewed, yet these minor irritations pale against the NX's exceptional build quality, reliability, and refined driving experience. For those prioritising trouble-free motoring, the NX is an excellent choice.
Best for: Buyers seeking premium build quality, exceptional reliability, and refined hybrid technology; those prioritising comfort and low-stress motoring; drivers wanting strong residual values.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum interior space, intuitive infotainment systems, or the sportiest driving dynamics; buyers sensitive to road noise at motorway speeds.

The Verdict
You should buy the NX 300h if: You prioritise exceptional build quality and reliability, seek a refined and comfortable premium SUV, want strong residual values, or prefer hybrid technology over traditional diesel engines.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, demand the most intuitive infotainment systems, or prioritise the sportiest driving dynamics in the premium SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Lexus NX 300h (2015-2021) is a compelling alternative to German rivals, offering superior build quality and reliability at competitive prices. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Volvo XC60 offers a slightly higher overall CarGurus rating, the NX 300h stands out for its exceptional user satisfaction (5.0/5) and trouble-free ownership experience. Its hybrid powertrain provides excellent value and environmental credentials, making it an increasingly attractive choice as diesel popularity wanes. For buyers valuing peace of mind and long-term dependability over cutting-edge infotainment, the NX 300h represents outstanding value in the premium compact SUV market.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Lexus is a name that can be trusted in terms of reliability and fuel efficiency.
Quality finish and quality materials. Very comfortable to drive with excellent seats. Good range of interesting technical toys to play with and all you will want as far as extras i.e. heated seats etc.
Safety, systems excellent, good vision and driving position. Roomy interior , has a spec safer spare wheel. Build quality excellent. The car for its size is ideal for easy parking in uk parking bays If find the ride is a bit “bumpy” . Price was good value from Lexus Leicester. Compared it with the Hyundai Tucson hybrid, had concerns about the smaller engine on the Hyundai (1.6) as I understand they can have valve problems over the longer term compared to the Lexus (2.5) engine type.
Brilliant Lexus quality vehicle with great comfort Thank you Lexus owner
