MG HS (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Amazing value for money | MG has a poor reputation for reliability |
| 75-mile official range for plug-in hybrid model | Underwhelming petrol engine |
| Long warranty | Poor fuel economy in entry-level model |
Quick Summary
The MG HS is a midsize family SUV that represents exceptional value in the competitive family SUV market. Starting at just £25,000, it significantly undercuts rivals like the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai whilst offering a well-rounded package with a spacious 507-litre boot, refined exterior design, and generous interior space. Available with either a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a plug-in hybrid variant with an impressive 75-mile electric range, the HS provides excellent equipment as standard, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster across all trims.
The PHEV model is particularly compelling for company car drivers, with CO2 emissions as low as 12g/km and a combined fuel economy figure of around 565mpg when regularly charged. Whilst the petrol engine feels underwhelming and the driving experience lacks the engagement of competitors, the HS excels in practicality and comfort, with excellent rear legroom and a comfortable ride quality. The Trophy trim adds powered seats, wireless charging, and Matrix LED headlights. However, potential buyers should be aware of MG's reputation for reliability concerns and the infotainment system's reliance on touchscreen controls for essential functions.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious and well-equipped family SUV, those interested in an affordable plug-in hybrid option, and families prioritising practicality and value over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking premium badge appeal, those wanting an engaging driving experience, or buyers concerned about brand reliability and after-sales support.

The Verdict
You should buy the HS if: You're seeking exceptional value for money, need a spacious and practical family SUV, or are interested in an affordable plug-in hybrid with impressive electric range.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium brand reputation, want an engaging driving experience, or require proven reliability and comprehensive after-sales support.
Competitive Position: The MG HS is a compelling proposition in the family SUV segment, offering outstanding value that undercuts established rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson by thousands of pounds. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai Tucson boasts excellent user ratings, the MG HS delivers impressive practicality, generous equipment, and a standout plug-in hybrid option at a significantly lower price point. For budget-conscious buyers willing to accept a less engaging drive and potential reliability concerns, the HS represents a sensible and affordable family SUV choice.

What people say
Just love this car. Especially the cabin space plenty of room and a comfortable drive.
Brilliant car it’s huge but so easy to drive. I am trying to work my way through the 322 pages of the handbook. It has all the bells and whistles I just have to learn how to use them. I’m really pleased with this car I definitely made the right choice
Outstanding! Better than we thought from preview and test drive.
Despite mileage seems a good little vehicle & in good condition too
Great value for the amount of features included such as heated leather seats and a panoramic roof. The finish on the dashboard, seats and doors is very impressive. The steering is responsive. The drivers seat is very easy to manoeuvre into the perfect position. The sport drive is extremely punchy! Very impressive in terms of style and value for money. Used to be a BMW X1 owner but no more! Delighted with the car so an MG HS convert.
