MG4 (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Strong value compared with key rivals | Not as roomy or practical as a Volkswagen ID.3 |
| Enjoyable to drive | Infotainment system is fiddly to use |
| Generously equipped across the range | Reliability could be an issue |
Quick Summary
The MG4 marks MG's coming of age for the 21st century, particularly in electric vehicles. Built on the Modular Scalable Platform designed solely for EVs, it benefits from a flat floor and slim battery pack, creating an airy interior with excellent packaging. The distinctive, modern design features a tablet-style touchscreen and slimline dashboard. Available in multiple versions—Premium Long Range, Premium Extended Range, and performance-focused XPower—the MG4 offers flexibility for different needs. The Long Range delivers 288 miles of range with 201bhp, whilst the Extended Range provides up to 338 miles. The dual-motor XPower achieves 429bhp and 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. Rapid charging supports 10-80% battery in around 30 minutes.
The MG4 is genuinely impressive to drive, with rear-wheel drive providing agility and keen handling. Relatively soft suspension delivers a smooth, supple ride whilst maintaining grip in corners. Long-distance cruising credentials are impeccable—quiet, stable at motorway speeds, and seamlessly punchy acceleration. The car holds its value well compared with rivals, making PCP payments more affordable. Whilst build quality isn't premium, it matches mainstream competitors like Volkswagen and Peugeot. The MG4 represents strong value with its space, performance, equipment, and competitive pricing, though the infotainment system requires some adjustment and reliability remains unproven.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an enjoyable, well-equipped electric hatchback, those wanting strong residual values, and drivers interested in performance variants (XPower).
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space and practicality, buyers wanting the most intuitive infotainment systems, or those concerned about long-term reliability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen ID.3 | 4/5 | —/5 | 36.6% | 3.9/5 |

| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 34.2% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MG4 if: You're seeking an enjoyable, well-equipped electric hatchback with strong value, want good residual values for affordable financing, or are interested in performance variants like the XPower.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space and practicality, want the most intuitive infotainment systems, or have concerns about long-term reliability.
Competitive Position: The MG4 is a compelling proposition in the affordable electric hatchback market. Whilst the Volkswagen ID.3 offers more interior space and the Cupra Born provides premium styling, the MG4 undercuts both on price whilst delivering genuine driving enjoyment and strong value retention. The Nissan Leaf, though established, lacks the MG4's modern design and equipment levels. The MG4's distinctive design, competitive pricing, generous equipment, and enjoyable driving dynamics make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a modern, capable electric hatchback without premium pricing.

4.5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Cons: Compared to a Nissan Leaf the ride is a bit fidgety and not as comfortable. The interior feels dark and rear visibility is compromised. Pros: Very well priced. Plenty of power. Good looks.
Theres nothing really to which you can compare this car. The price, kit , looks and driving pleasure are all there. Even the clean design of the dashboard looks good. Nothing to beat it at the price!
