MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the most affordable EVs on the market | Lots of body lean when cornering |
| Spacious and practical | Slow charging speeds for early models |
| Very low running costs | Unfashionable shape and styling |
Quick Summary
The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the UK's only affordable electric estate car, offering no-nonsense value and family-friendly practicality in a market dominated by expensive electric crossovers. Similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf Estate yet significantly cheaper than rivals such as the Citroën e-C4 and Volkswagen ID.3, it carved out a niche as a spacious and affordable alternative. The final version used a 61.1kWh battery and 154bhp front-mounted electric motor delivering an official range of 249 miles, with real-world figures around 220 miles. It supports up to 87kW rapid charging for 10-80% top-ups in approximately 35 minutes.
A major facelift in 2022 brought sharper styling, a revised cabin and updated infotainment, but the MG5 stayed true to its original formula: simplicity, practicality and value for money. The MG5 came with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty from new, with its high-voltage battery receiving the same cover and transferable to future owners. For families seeking a sensibly priced EV with more space than most small electric SUVs, the MG5 remains an appealing option, especially as a used buy now that MG has ceased production.
Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking practical electric transport, those needing genuine estate-car space with zero tailpipe emissions, and buyers wanting low running costs and impressive warranty coverage.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium styling and desirability, drivers requiring rapid charging on early models, or buyers seeking the latest infotainment technology.

The Verdict
You should buy the MG5 if: You're a budget-conscious family seeking practical electric transport, need genuine estate-car space with zero tailpipe emissions, or want low running costs and impressive warranty coverage.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium styling and desirability, require rapid charging on older models, or seek the latest infotainment technology.
Competitive Position: The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the best-value electric estate car on the used market by a comfortable margin. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Kia Niro for user appeal or the Volkswagen ID.3 for technology, its affordability, spaciousness, low running costs and transferable seven-year warranty make it a thoroughly practical and common-sense choice for families. The MG5 is pleasant to drive with decent real-world range, and the facelifted version addressed earlier charging concerns. In every respect, from roominess to equipment and efficiency, the MG5 is more than adequate and easy to recommend for budget-conscious buyers.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Well equipped and good range for a budget range EV.
Nice smooth ride, Im not someone who needs to be the first away from the traffic lights but it picks up speed in a smoothly unfussy way and the ride is comfortable.
This is an ideal family estate car which has everything you need except the ability to tow a caravan or a trailer with a nose weight greater than 40 kg
My first drive in an ev and I was impressed. Quiet, comfortable , roomy for an estate car. Easy to drive and lots of acceleration when needed. I bought a 71 pre face lift model with medium range battery as the saving over the new one was huge. Its a very discrete car, it doesnt scream ev from its appearance. It has good load space, decent room for rear passengers and ample range for my journeys unless going a long way on holiday.
