Nice smooth ride, Im not someone who needs to be the first away from the traffic lights but it picks up speed in a smoothly unfussy way and the ride is comfortable.

This is an ideal family estate car which has everything you need except the ability to tow a caravan or a trailer with a nose weight greater than 40 kg

My first drive in an ev and I was impressed. Quiet, comfortable , roomy for an estate car. Easy to drive and lots of acceleration when needed. I bought a 71 pre face lift model with medium range battery as the saving over the new one was huge. Its a very discrete car, it doesnt scream ev from its appearance. It has good load space, decent room for rear passengers and ample range for my journeys unless going a long way on holiday.

MG MG5 (2020-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One of the most affordable EVs on the market | Lots of body lean when cornering |
| Spacious and practical | Slow charging speeds for early models |
| Very low running costs | Unfashionable shape and styling |
Quick Summary
The MG MG5 (2020-2025) is the UK's only affordable all-electric estate car, offering no-nonsense value and family-friendly practicality. Similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf Estate yet significantly cheaper than rivals like the Citroën e-C4 and Volkswagen ID.3, it carved out a unique niche in the EV market. The final version used a 61.1kWh battery and 154bhp electric motor delivering an official range of 249 miles and real-world figures around 220 miles. A major facelift in 2022 brought sharper styling, a revised cabin and updated infotainment, whilst maintaining its core formula of simplicity, practicality and value for money.
The MG5's greatest strength is its practicality. With 479 litres of boot space (or 1,367 litres with rear seats folded), it easily outpaces similarly priced electric hatchbacks. The cabin offers generous room for adults and two Isofix points for child seats, though interior quality reflects its budget positioning. Running costs are impressively low, with DC rapid charging supporting 10-80% top-ups in around 35 minutes. The seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, transferable to future owners, provides valuable peace of mind. Whilst driving dynamics are unassuming and the styling unfashionable, the MG5 delivers a competent, relaxed experience that prioritises practicality over excitement.
Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking an affordable electric estate car, those prioritising practicality and space over premium styling, and buyers wanting low running costs with genuine warranty protection.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, premium interior quality, or fashionable design, and those with early models requiring faster charging capabilities.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG MG5 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 30.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Kia Niro | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen ID.3 | 4/5 | N/A | 32.6% | 3.9/5 |
| Citroën C4 | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.8% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MG5 if: You're seeking an affordable electric estate car with genuine practicality, prioritising space and low running costs over premium styling, or wanting warranty protection on a used EV.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, premium interior quality, fashionable design, or require fast charging on early models.
Competitive Position: The MG MG5 (2020-2025) occupies a unique position as the best-value electric estate car on the used market. Whilst the Kia Niro and Citroën e-C4 offer comparable value scores and user ratings, the MG5 stands apart through its estate-car practicality and affordability. The Volkswagen ID.3 provides a more premium alternative but at a higher price point. The MG5's combination of spaciousness, low running costs, transferable warranty and unbeatable value makes it an exceptionally sensible choice for families prioritising practicality over prestige. Its unfashionable styling and soft handling are minor compromises for such compelling practicality and affordability.
