MINI (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lively and entertaining to drive | The Convertible has a small boot |
| The EV is ideal around town | Ungainly looks if you choose the five-door |
| John Cooper Works GP cars are very quick | More powerful models can wear out tyres quickly |
Quick Summary
Now in its third generation under BMW's stewardship, the MINI remains one of the most alluring hatchbacks on sale. The current F56 model arrived in early 2014 and is bigger than its predecessor, featuring an all-new platform and engine range. A five-door version launched several months later, offering improved rear seat space and practicality, though at the expense of some styling elegance. The engine line-up includes turbocharged petrol units ranging from 134bhp in the Cooper to 302bhp in the John Cooper Works, plus diesel options and an all-electric model available since 2019.
The MINI is defined by its versatility and lively handling characteristics that have set it apart for decades. Whilst the rear seats remain tight in the three-door, the five-door offers considerably more space. The interior maintains a high-quality feel with excellent driving position and sensible controls via the iDrive rotary knob. Running costs vary significantly depending on powertrain; the Electric is cheapest at around £9 to charge for 100 miles, whilst diesel models achieve 50mpg-plus and petrol variants around 35mpg. The transferable TLC servicing package covers maintenance for five years or 50,000 miles, providing substantial savings on dealer servicing costs.
Best for: Drivers seeking entertaining, go-kart-like handling, those wanting an all-electric city car, buyers looking for a premium hatchback with personalisation options, and enthusiasts interested in high-performance variants.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum rear seat space (three-door), buyers seeking the most practical compact hatchback, or those wanting the lowest running costs across all variants.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MINI | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Fiat 500 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 44.3% | 4.2/5 |
| DS 3 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 48.6% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi A1 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MINI if: You seek entertaining, go-kart-like handling, want an all-electric city car, desire a premium hatchback with extensive personalisation, or are interested in high-performance variants.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear seat space, need the most practical compact hatchback, or require the lowest running costs across all variants.
Competitive Position: The MINI (2013-present) stands out as the most engaging premium hatchback in its class, offering superior driving dynamics and versatility compared to rivals. Whilst the Fiat 500 and DS 3 offer better value for money, the MINI's lively handling, quality interior, and diverse powertrain options—including an all-electric variant—justify its premium positioning. The Audi A1 matches the MINI's quality but lacks its entertaining character. For buyers prioritising driving enjoyment and brand prestige over outright value, the MINI is the standout choice.

The MINI Mini has earned a reputation among owners for its fun driving experience, comfortable ride, and quality build across model years. Many drivers appreciate the sporty handling and value for money, especially in the more powerful S models. However, some owners express concerns about high maintenance costs, quirks in the design, and the performance of lower engine options.

What people say
The mini was in good condition and good value for money
It's exactly the perfect car for me at this time of my life. Small, compact and economical. Two seats are perfect for me, as I rarely have anyone else in my car. Extremely happy with my purchase. Looking forward to many happy trips in my little Mini
I thought the car was great value with plenty of features, low mileage and great to drive.
Nice loved the heated leather seats panaramic roof and 2l engine
This is a lovely car to drive, very firm, holds the road, very nippy! Goes really fast if you want too. It looks great too. One downside is that my model doesnt do android play or have sat nab, which I thought should be standard.
