Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive practicality and space | Panoramic sunroof reduces headroom |
| Seven seats when most rivals have five | Not as capable off road as a Land Rover Discovery Sport |
| Wow-factor of MBUX infotainment system | The AMG model is a bit OTT |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-present) is a practical and spacious compact SUV that fills the gap between the GLA and GLC models. Built on the same underpinnings as the A-Class and B-Class, it prioritises function over fashion with an upright, slab-sided design. The standout feature is its seven-seat configuration, rare in this segment, with the third-row seats stowing neatly under the boot floor when not required. The GLB offers a decent boot in five-seat mode and delivers competent, pragmatic driving dynamics with commendable ride quality and responsive steering and braking.
The acclaimed MBUX infotainment system is a major highlight, featuring configurable screens and intuitive controls via touchpad, steering wheel buttons, and a central touchscreen. Running costs are reasonable for a premium badge, with the 200d diesel achieving 49.6mpg and the petrol GLB 200 returning 39.2mpg. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic offers 302bhp for those seeking more excitement. All-wheel drive is available but the GLB is not designed for serious off-road capability. With strong retained values and comprehensive technology, it appeals to family buyers prioritising space and practicality over driving thrills.
Best for: Family buyers seeking seven-seat practicality, those valuing premium technology and infotainment, and drivers wanting a spacious compact SUV with excellent interior versatility.
Not ideal for: Off-road enthusiasts, buyers seeking dynamic driving engagement, or those sensitive to reduced headroom with a panoramic sunroof fitted.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.0% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the GLB-Class if: You're a family buyer seeking seven-seat practicality, value premium technology and infotainment, or want a spacious compact SUV with excellent interior versatility and strong retained values.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise off-road capability, dynamic driving engagement, or require maximum headroom with a panoramic sunroof.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment, offering rare seven-seat practicality that most rivals cannot match. Whilst the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 provide comparable premium quality, neither offers the seating flexibility of the GLB. The Land Rover Discovery Sport excels in off-road capability and user satisfaction, but at a higher price point. The GLB's standout MBUX infotainment system, practical design, and strong value retention make it an excellent option for families prioritising space and technology over driving dynamics or off-road prowess.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Good small SUV, the 220d engine felt correct for the car. Interior fittings more SUV than limo., but liveable. Did not buy as rear seats are too hard for my intended use.
Great car plenty of kit on Prem Plus , plenty of power if you need it with only 1300 petrol which keeps insurance low Great space for families and the dog
I only had a short test drive, but the car is very comfortable, spacious and ultra modern inside. It drives well and is quiet and refined. If your looking for a smallish 7 seater, it needs to be on your list.
