Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| High quality cabin | Expensive, even by the standards of the class |
| Well equipped as standard | Adaptive cruise control costs extra |
| PHEV has huge electric-only range | PHEV versions have a small boot |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLC (2023-present) is a refined, spacious, and classy mid-sized family SUV that sits between the smaller GLA and larger GLE in Mercedes' SUV line-up. This third-generation model features a heavily updated platform that's 60mm longer than its predecessor, offering improved interior space and a choice of three 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plus plug-in hybrid options with an impressive electric range of up to 80 miles. The cabin is exceptionally well appointed with high-quality materials, intuitive infotainment, and generous standard equipment across all trim levels, making it one of the best in its class for interior design and perceived quality.
The GLC excels as a family SUV with excellent practicality, spacious rear legroom, and boot capacity of 600-620 litres in mild-hybrid models. For company car drivers, the plug-in hybrid variants are particularly compelling, offering class-leading electric range and favourable tax treatment. However, the GLC commands premium pricing even within its competitive segment, and adaptive cruise control is frustratingly restricted to the expensive top-spec trim. Running costs are reasonable for the class, with diesel engines achieving up to 51mpg and plug-in hybrids offering significant savings through electric-only driving at approximately 13-15p per mile on standard tariffs.
Best for: Company car drivers seeking premium plug-in hybrid technology, families prioritising comfort and refinement, and buyers valuing high-quality interiors and comprehensive standard equipment.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking sportier handling dynamics, or private purchasers unwilling to pay premium prices for advanced driver assistance features.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLC | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.6% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the GLC if: You're a company car driver seeking premium plug-in hybrid technology, a family prioritising comfort and refinement, or a buyer valuing high-quality interiors and comprehensive standard equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking sportier handling dynamics, or unwilling to pay premium prices for advanced driver assistance features.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLC (2023-present) is a consummate family SUV that competes strongly in the premium mid-sized segment. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Volvo XC60 offers comparable user satisfaction, the GLC distinguishes itself through superior cabin quality, class-leading plug-in hybrid technology with exceptional electric range, and comprehensive standard equipment. However, its premium pricing and the frustrating restriction of adaptive cruise control to top-spec trims are notable drawbacks. For company car drivers, the GLC PHEVs are unmatched in this class, but private buyers should explore nearly-new examples or negotiate discounts to maximise value.

(11 reviews)Love this model! Better than the GLE. Quality interior compared to other equivalent manufacturers.
The model I chose being a GLC 250D Premium Plus AMG Line has a good luxury specification and performance. For an SUV this is a reasonably economical vehicle. 2016 makes it also car road tax efficient. Also the car insurance is not astronomical.
