Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More rugged than most crossovers | The 2.2-litre diesel needs frequent servicing |
| Proper 4x4 versions are available | Dated and dull driving experience |
| Well equipped whichever model you choose | Poorly finished cabin |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) is a practical compact SUV that launched as a rival to the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti. Available in front-wheel-drive and proper 4x4 versions, it offers an upright driving position and SUV styling with lower running costs than traditional off-roaders. The 442-litre boot provides generous luggage space, whilst the rear seats fold with a 60/40 split and incorporate a ski hatch. Standard equipment is generous across the range, including air-conditioning, alloy wheels, and dual-stage airbags on entry-level models.
The engine line-up has evolved significantly over the generation. Early models featured a 115bhp 1.6-litre petrol or 148bhp 1.8 DiD diesel, with a 2.2-litre diesel arriving in 2013 offering superior mid-range power and automatic transmission. Later, a 1.6-litre diesel replaced the 1.8, whilst the final years saw a 148bhp 2.0-litre petrol as the sole option. The 1.6 diesel is the pick for fuel economy, achieving around 55mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 2.2 diesel suits those towing or covering motorway miles. Running costs are competitive, with insurance groups starting from 13 of 50. However, the ASX isn't engaging to drive—the ride is comfortable but the overall experience feels bland compared to rivals like the Skoda Yeti or Ford Puma.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, well-equipped compact SUV with genuine 4x4 capability and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising engaging driving dynamics, premium cabin quality, or the latest technology and space offered by newer competitors.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Mitsubishi ASX | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.3% | 3.9/5 |

| Renault Captur Mk1 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the ASX if: You're seeking a practical, well-equipped compact SUV with genuine 4x4 capability and competitive running costs on a budget.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, premium cabin quality, or the latest technology and space offered by newer competitors.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi ASX (2010-2020) occupies a practical middle ground in the compact SUV market, offering genuine 4x4 capability and generous equipment at a competitive price. However, it struggles against more dynamic rivals like the Skoda Yeti and falls behind newer competitors such as the Renault Captur and Nissan Qashqai in terms of driving engagement, cabin quality, and interior space. Whilst the ASX makes sense as a used buy for budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and off-road ability, it lacks the refinement and driving appeal of its key rivals. The diesel engines offer excellent fuel economy and low running costs, making it a sensible choice for those prioritising economy over excitement.

4 Overall rating
(1 reviews)It's a lovely car. Drives well, fits 2 car seats in the back but the remaining space is small even for an older child that no longer needs a car seat. Nice features, love the panoramic roof. Boot size is fair. Overall I would recommend.
