The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home

Very comfortable seats. Smooth driving experience. Limited range below 200miles

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!

Nissan Leaf (2011-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A true electric car pioneer | Very short range of early cars |
| Cheap to buy and run | Cheap-looking and dated interior |
| Very reliable | Lacks the kerbside appeal of a Renault Zoe |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Leaf (2011-2016), the first-generation model, was a pioneering pure electric hatchback that made zero-emission motoring accessible and affordable. Available with battery lease or purchase options, the mk1 Leaf proved that electric cars could be practical family vehicles. Early models offered around 60 miles of real-world range, whilst the 2013 24kWh battery upgrade extended this to approximately 80 miles, and the 2015 30kWh variant pushed range to around 100 miles. The five-door layout provides adequate practicality for small families, with a boot spacious enough for buggies and bags, though the fixed steering wheel reach and high-set seat may frustrate taller drivers.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging at home costing between 3p and 4.5p per mile—roughly a third of petrol car fuel costs. Servicing is affordable at around £100 for minor and £150 for major services. The Leaf is comfy, easy to drive, and unfailingly reliable, with many examples exceeding 150,000 miles. However, the interior feels dated and cheap, and the car lacks the aesthetic appeal of rivals like the Renault Zoe or BMW i3. The mk1 Leaf is best suited to short commutes and school runs rather than long journeys, as charging takes up to 10 hours on a domestic socket and rapid charging infrastructure is evolving away from the CHAdeMO standard.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, reliable daily runabout with low running costs, those with home charging capability, and environmentally conscious drivers prioritising zero-emission motoring.
Not ideal for: Drivers requiring long-range capability, those without home charging access, buyers prioritising premium interior quality or striking design, or motorists needing rapid charging compatibility with modern CCS infrastructure.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 30.4% | 4.0/5 |
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 3.0/5 | 34.6% | 4.1/5 |
| Hyundai IONIQ | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW i3 | 3/5 | N/A | 33.5% | 3.8/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Leaf if: You're on a budget, seeking an affordable and reliable daily runabout with exceptionally low running costs, have home charging capability, or prioritise zero-emission motoring.
Consider alternatives if: You require long-range capability, lack home charging access, prioritise premium interior quality or striking design, or need modern rapid charging compatibility.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2011-2016) remains one of the cheapest ways into used electric motoring, offering exceptional value and reliability. Whilst it lacks the aesthetic appeal of the Renault Zoe or the premium feel of the BMW i3, and the Hyundai IONIQ offers superior ratings and more modern technology, the Leaf's affordability, low running costs, and proven dependability make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking practical, environmentally friendly transport. It's particularly well-suited to those with home charging and predictable short-distance driving patterns.
