Renault Kadjar (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Keenly priced as a used car | Dull to drive |
| Spacious and practical interior | Bland interior design |
| Excellent fuel economy | Infotainment system is too fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Renault Kadjar (2015-present) is Renault's entry into the small, family-friendly SUV market, developed in conjunction with the Nissan Qashqai and sharing the same basic underpinnings and engine range. Every Kadjar is spacious and well thought-out inside, with a generous 527-litre boot and comfortable rear seating for two adults, or three at a push. The cabin offers plenty of storage options and room for both driver and passenger, though the interior lacks the versatility of rivals like the Skoda Karoq or Citroën C5 Aircross, with rear seats that split and fold rather than slide individually.
The Kadjar feels somewhat soulless to drive, with a slightly bouncy ride quality on earlier models—smaller-wheeled versions with softer tyres are more desirable. Engine options have evolved over time, starting with turbocharged 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre diesels and a 1.2-litre petrol, with a 1.6-litre petrol turbo added in 2017, and a complete engine overhaul in 2018 introducing two 1.3-litre petrols. Fuel economy is a strong suit, with efficient diesel versions achieving around 60mpg and petrol models reaching 40-45mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are low thanks to impressive fuel economy and low CO2 outputs, with older models particularly cheap to tax. Renault's fixed-price servicing is reasonable at £169 for a minor service and £269 for a full service. Most engines use a timing chain, though the 1.5-litre diesel has a timing belt requiring replacement every four years or 48,000 miles at approximately £500-600.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, functional, and reliable family car with low running costs, and those prioritising practicality and value over driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging driving experience, premium interior design, or an intuitive infotainment system, or those who value cutting-edge technology and refinement.

The Verdict
You should buy the Kadjar if: You're on a budget, seeking a spacious, functional, and reliable family car with low running costs, and prioritising practicality and value over driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You desire an engaging driving experience, premium interior design, an intuitive infotainment system, or cutting-edge technology and refinement.
Competitive Position: The Renault Kadjar (2015-present) is a sensible choice in the small SUV market, offering excellent value, spaciousness, and low running costs. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Peugeot 3008 or Nissan Qashqai for driving engagement or interior refinement, its tempting price point and practical design make it an attractive option for budget-conscious families. The Kadjar's impressive fuel economy and reasonable servicing costs further enhance its appeal as an economical family vehicle, though buyers seeking a more dynamic or premium experience may find better alternatives amongst its competitors.

The Renault Kadjar has generally received positive feedback from owners across all model years, particularly for its comfort, spacious interior, and impressive performance, especially noted with the 1.3tce engine. Many drivers appreciate the smooth ride it offers, making it a good value for money. What people say
Great spec car, 1.5 diesel getting 55 mpg, very comfortable drive and love to be able to split the room in the boot, good visibility all round wouldn’t hesitate to recommend
good value, got everithing i wanted, excelent condition, looked at others this was the best one.
Definitely value for money and a comfortable drive .
Good car, for size, space, comfy,,practical, smooth ride and 1.3tce is punchy around town! Just wish I’d checked more thoroughly as I’d have gone for Dynamic s or higher specs, as Dynamic Nav does not come with parking sensors or camera which I’m used to. Rear visibility is limited! Makes parking awkward
The Dynamique S Nav 1.5 diesel has all the extras I like and need.
