Renault Twingo (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Bags of character inside and out	A few ergonomic foibles
Really fun to drive	Limited driving range
Surprisingly practical for such a small car	Not quick. At all

Quick Summary

The Renault Twingo is a small electric car designed for drivers who don't regularly undertake longer journeys. At just 3.8 metres long with a 27.5kWh LFP battery, it delivers a 163-mile WLTP range and is one of the most efficient electric cars on sale, achieving 5.9 miles/kWh. Built in Slovenia on the same platform as the Renault 5, this front-wheel drive EV weighs only 1,200kg, contributing to its impressive real-world efficiency. The five-door hatchback offers sliding rear seats that adjust by 17cm, boot space of 260-360 litres, and thoughtful interior design details that reference the original 1990s Twingo.

Driving the Twingo is an uncomplicated delight. The 80bhp electric motor provides adequate performance up to 50mph, with secure handling, responsive steering, and excellent ride comfort. Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging from home on an off-peak tariff costing as little as 2p per mile. Insurance costs are minimal, and the Twingo represents outstanding value as an affordable, sensible option for local journeys or as a second household car. Available from under £20,000, it combines practicality with genuine desirability.

Best for: Urban and suburban drivers seeking an affordable, characterful electric car for local journeys, second-car buyers, and those prioritising low running costs and fun driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers requiring extended range, rapid acceleration, or those needing a car for frequent longer motorway journeys.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Twingo if: You're seeking an affordable, characterful electric car for urban and suburban driving, want exceptionally low running costs, or need a fun second car for local journeys.

Consider alternatives if: You require extended driving range, rapid acceleration, or plan frequent longer motorway journeys.

Competitive Position: The Renault Twingo stands out in the affordable electric car market with its outstanding expert rating and user satisfaction. Whilst the Fiat 500e and Citroën e-C3 offer comparable overall ratings, the Twingo excels with superior character, driving enjoyment, and practicality for its size. The BYD Dolphin Surf provides more range but lacks the Twingo's charm and user approval. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising fun, efficiency, and value, the Twingo is the standout choice in this segment.
