Skoda Karoq (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very roomy and practical | Some issues with 1.5 petrol engine |
| Comfortable on the road | Slightly anonymous styling |
| Plenty of standard equipment | Some rivals are nicer to drive |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Karoq is a dependable and talented small family SUV that has remained competitive nearly a decade after its launch. Launched in 2017 to fill the gap left by the discontinued Yeti, it sits between the smaller Kamiq and larger Kodiaq models. Following a facelift in 2022 and further updates in 2024, the Karoq gained revised engines, more standard equipment, and new trim levels. It offers excellent practicality with 521 litres of boot space (588 litres with optional Varioflex seating), generous headroom and legroom for all passengers, and ingenious 'Simply Clever' features such as a windscreen ticket holder and umbrella in the driver's door.
The Karoq drives well with neat handling and a composed ride, particularly in four-wheel-drive versions with multi-link rear suspension. Engine options include a revised 1.0-litre TSI petrol with 114bhp, a 1.5-litre TSI petrol with 148bhp, a 187bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol, and a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel. Fuel economy is respectable across the range, with the 1.0-litre achieving 46.4-48.8mpg and the diesel returning 44.7-49.3mpg. Every model comes with comprehensive safety equipment, a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and a connected infotainment system. Service intervals are annual or every 10,000 miles, with reasonable maintenance costs by Volkswagen Group standards.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and comfortable SUV with excellent standard equipment and a well-built cabin, and those prioritising practicality and reliability over driving excitement.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting the most engaging driving dynamics (Ford Kuga and Mazda CX-5 are better choices) or those seeking striking, distinctive styling.

The Verdict
You should buy the Karoq if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and comfortable family SUV with excellent standard equipment, a well-built cabin, and dependable performance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics (Ford Kuga offers more sporting handling) or distinctive, eye-catching styling.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Karoq stands out as a highly practical and well-equipped small family SUV, earning the highest expert rating among its rivals. Whilst the Ford Kuga offers more engaging driving dynamics and the Nissan Qashqai provides strong user satisfaction, the Karoq excels in spaciousness, comfort, and standard equipment. Its recent updates have enhanced its value proposition further, making it an excellent choice for families prioritising practicality and reliability. The Varioflex seating system and generous boot space provide genuine advantages for those needing flexibility and storage.

What people say
Amazing car with lots of space. very impressed with the specs.
Great spec and pleasant driving, great value for money. Good all-rounder
Bought used approved, to replace a similar car written off in a motorway shunt. Fast enough for me, great condition , all round great car in my experience. Skoda have nailed it with a product that stands out in the VAG line up with exceptional value for money. Couldnt be more pleased.
The Karoq is a joy to drive with excellent spec for an entry level car.
Love the look, love the colour (mine is a metallic darkish blue). Enough oomph in the 1.5 engine- only problem I've got to get used to a key starter having had a push button before. And not an automatic brake, have to remember. But not really an issue!!!
