Skoda Karoq (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very roomy and practical | Some issues with 1.5 petrol engine |
| Comfortable on the road | Slightly anonymous styling |
| Plenty of standard equipment | Some rivals are nicer to drive |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Karoq is a dependable and talented small family SUV that has remained competitive nearly a decade after its 2017 launch. Recent updates have enhanced its value proposition, with all models featuring comprehensive standard equipment including safety systems, infotainment connectivity, and practical features. The cabin is well-appointed and spacious, offering excellent headroom and legroom for all passengers. With 521 litres of boot space (or up to 1,810 litres with the optional Varioflex seating system), it rivals or exceeds competitors like the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson.
The Karoq drives well with neat handling and a composed ride, particularly in four-wheel-drive versions with multi-link rear suspension. Engine options include a revised 1.0-litre TSI petrol (114bhp), 1.5-litre TSI petrol (148bhp), 2.0-litre TSI petrol (187bhp), and a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel. Fuel economy is competitive, with the 1.0-litre achieving 46.4-48.8mpg and the diesel returning 44.7-49.3mpg. Service intervals are annual or every 10,000 miles, with reasonable maintenance costs through Skoda's authorised network or independent garages.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and comfortable SUV with excellent standard equipment and dependable performance, and those prioritising practicality and value over driving excitement.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting the most engaging driving dynamics (consider the Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-5 instead) or those seeking distinctive, eye-catching styling.

The Verdict
You should buy the Karoq if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and comfortable family SUV with excellent standard equipment, dependable performance, and strong value for money.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics (Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-5 offer sportier handling) or distinctive styling over practicality and comfort.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Karoq is a standout in the small family SUV segment, offering superior practicality, comfort, and standard equipment compared to its rivals. Whilst the Ford Kuga delivers more engaging driving dynamics and the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca offer competitive alternatives, the Karoq's combination of spaciousness, thoughtful design, and value makes it an excellent choice for families prioritising practicality and comfort. Its five-star expert rating reflects its all-round capability as a dependable, well-equipped family SUV.
