Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds with a top speed of 99mph. It averages more than 60mpg claimed, easily returning over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual remains more popular with its light clutch and easy shift action. Around town, the Aygo is extremely easy to drive and manoeuvre, comfortable, and handles small bumps well. However, at higher speeds it struggles; the engine works hard and becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED on pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing around £145, and small replacement tyres at approximately £60 per corner. The petrol engine uses a timing chain, avoiding substantial future bills. Insurance groups sit at six to nine, in line with most rivals.
