This second-generation model retained the strengths of its predecessor, including its compact footprint and low running costs, whilst adding more playful exterior styling and modern features. Available in three and five-door versions (later five-door only), the Aygo shares its underpinnings with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. It offers a four-seater configuration with 168 litres of boot space, though access is limited by a high loading lip. The interior is straightforward and well laid out, with optional colour-coded inserts adding visual appeal.

Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds and averages more than 60mpg, easily returning over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual gearbox with its light clutch and easy shift is more popular. The Aygo excels in town, proving extremely easy to manoeuvre, but struggles on motorways where the engine becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED for pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing at around £145, and small, affordable tyres. The timing chain engine eliminates costly belt replacement concerns. Toyota's excellent reliability and long warranty make this an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers prioritising dependability over driving dynamics.
