Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Feels like a bigger, more expensive car than it is | Unexciting to drive – sporty GTI is a particular disappointment |
| Fuel-efficient BlueMotion diesels | Not that well equipped |
| Refined and comfortable to drive | Understated styling could be seen as boring |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) is a mature and refined supermini that feels considerably larger and more upmarket than its modest exterior dimensions suggest. Designed by Walter de Silva, it boasts excellent build quality and a well-appointed interior that rivals cars in a higher class. The Polo offers surprising practicality with 280 litres of boot space, expanding to 952 litres with the rear seats folded, and comfortable accommodation for four adults. Available in three and five-door body styles, it received a mid-life refresh in 2014 that introduced new engines and technology whilst maintaining its understated styling.
The Polo excels in refinement and motorway comfort, making it an ideal choice for those prioritising relaxation over driving engagement. Early petrol models achieve close to 50mpg, whilst later TSI-badged versions deliver significantly better efficiency. Diesel options, particularly the BlueMotion variants, are remarkably frugal, returning up to 90mpg. The GTI performance models, available with either a 178bhp twincharged 1.4-litre or a 189bhp turbocharged 1.8-litre engine, offer quick and discreet transport, though they lack the excitement of rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST. Running costs are reasonable, with low insurance groups and modest servicing expenses at independent specialists.
Best for: Buyers seeking a grown-up, comfortable supermini with premium feel, those prioritising refinement and motorway capability, and drivers wanting excellent fuel economy (BlueMotion diesels).
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts wanting engaging, fun-to-drive dynamics, buyers on a tight budget, or those seeking cutting-edge technology and equipment as standard.

The Verdict
You should buy the Polo if: You want a refined, comfortable supermini with premium feel, prioritise motorway capability and relaxation, or seek excellent fuel economy with the BlueMotion diesel range.
Consider alternatives if: You're seeking engaging driving dynamics, on a tight budget, or require the latest technology and comprehensive equipment as standard.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) is a strong contender in the used supermini market, offering a premium feel and refined driving experience that rivals more expensive cars. Whilst it lacks the driving engagement of the Ford Fiesta and the budget-friendly appeal of the Vauxhall Corsa, its superior build quality, comfort, and refinement justify its slightly higher price. The BlueMotion diesel variants are particularly impressive for fuel efficiency, making the Polo an excellent choice for those valuing comfort and economy over outright driving excitement or badge prestige.

4.6 Overall rating
(11 reviews)The car was great to drive and @ 60,000 for 3k is a bargain.
Not good value. A few paint chips and front bumper in need of respray as paint laquet flaking off.
This VW is just as advertised. It is in very good condition, almost like new. The car has a full VW service history. The interior shows minimal, if any, signs of wear and tear. The car is responsive with excellent handling. Given the price range for used VW Polos this is positive value. Most importantly - the Seller has been excellent throughout, being very responsive and caring towards the Customer.
Had the car 2 days so far so good looks and drives lovely good spec interior
Good features and lovely to drive. Prices remain high not much difference between new and used prices.
