Volkswagen Scirocco (2008-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Loads of cabin space for a sporty coupe | Not quite as sexy as an Audi TT |
| Driving experience balances sporty and sensible | Not as fun to drive as a BMW 2 Series |
| High-performance R is great fun | Potential reliability issues |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Scirocco mk3 (2008-2017) is a stylish three-door coupe that bears little resemblance to its Golf underpinnings. With curvaceous styling, wider suspension tracks, and a distinctly different driving experience, it stands apart from mainstream hatchbacks. The subtle 2014 mid-life refresh introduced reprofiled tail lamps, updated interior trims, and new engines, though the overall design remained largely unchanged. Despite initial popularity, the Scirocco eventually became overlooked as buyers shifted towards SUVs, with production ending in 2017 without a replacement.
Inside, the Scirocco is stylish, classy, and robustly constructed, with comfortable sports seats and excellent adjustment for the driver. Headroom is tight in the rear for taller passengers, but knee-room is generous for a coupe, and the 312-litre boot extends to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded. The range includes turbocharged petrol engines from 120bhp to 261bhp, plus turbodiesel options, all delivering strong mid-range performance. The high-performance Scirocco R offers true sports car pace, whilst higher-powered 2.0-litre TSI models provide the best blend of performance, smoothness, and efficiency. Roadholding is very high, with accurate steering and compact dimensions inspiring confidence, making it an excellent all-rounder for both country roads and motorway journeys.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, practical coupe with sporty credentials, those wanting a blend of comfort and performance, and enthusiasts interested in the high-performance R variant.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium badge appeal (like an Audi TT), drivers seeking maximum driving excitement (like a BMW 2 Series), or buyers concerned about potential reliability issues.

The Verdict
You should buy the Scirocco if: You're seeking a stylish, practical coupe with sporty credentials, wanting a blend of comfort and performance, or interested in the high-performance R variant.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium badge appeal, seek maximum driving excitement, or are concerned about potential reliability issues.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Scirocco mk3 is a likeable and accomplished coupe that does affordable coupe duties exceptionally well. It looks racy, feels fast throughout the range, and is fun, comfortable, and more practical than most rivals. However, reliability concerns are a significant consideration that cannot be ignored. Compared to the Audi TT for premium appeal or the Peugeot RCZ for style, the Scirocco offers excellent value and practicality. Thorough pre-purchase inspection by a reputable specialist is essential to avoid costly repairs and ensure your ownership experience is more pleasure than financial pain.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Beautiful car in all ways. An absolute pleasure to drive. Good value for money at the price I paid . Only quibble is the lack of cruise control.
The car is a perfect all rounder car. You need a good looking car? You need a 4 seater car? You need boot space? Going long distance or short? Finding large car for parking an issue? Cheap road tax? Road bumps causing an issue? Look no further. This car deals with all of these with great positivity and expectations. Only con I can find in this car is the fact that you can feel those tiny bumps on uneven road very easily, it doesn’t ride smoothly as you would think cars are designed for. I’m sure tuning the suspicion may fix this. Otherwise the seats are very comfortable. Only reason why it doesn’t receive a full 5 star rating from me. Thank you
Exciting car just to look at yet alone drive. Great driving experience especially with the DSG box Needs more power but that is easily remedied because of the turbo Avery good buy
