Volvo S90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Ploughs a different furrow from BMW and Mercedes | Not the sportiest of cars |
| Minimalist interior is restrained and elegant | Plug-in hybrid the only option from 2020 onwards |
| Comfortable to drive and be driven in | Infotainment system is a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a large premium saloon that takes a distinctly different approach to its German rivals. Rather than competing on sportiness or raw power, the S90 prioritises elegance, refinement, and comfort. Its beautifully appointed interior features a minimalist design centred around a portrait-oriented touchscreen, whilst the cabin materials are of the highest quality. The spacious interior offers exemplary driving position and plentiful legroom, with a 500-litre boot providing decent storage. Available with diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the S90 delivers a refined and quiet driving experience, though it prioritises compliance over dynamic engagement.
The S90 was launched with three trim levels—Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design—though from 2020 this was rationalised to just two. All versions come well-equipped with LED headlights, heated leather seats, satnav, and Bluetooth as standard. Running costs vary by powertrain, with the D4 diesel achieving 50.4mpg and the T8 plug-in hybrid offering 141.2mpg officially, though real-world figures will be lower. Insurance groups range from 27 to 42, and servicing intervals are 12 months with flexible payment plans available. As a used car, the S90 represents an excellent alternative to conventional German rivals, offering a unique identity and exceptional comfort for long-distance driving.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium saloon that prioritises comfort and refinement over sportiness, those valuing elegant design and minimalist interiors, and drivers who appreciate Volvo's safety-focused philosophy.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting dynamic handling comparable to a BMW 5 Series, those seeking powerful engines, or buyers requiring traditional infotainment systems that are intuitive to use.

The Verdict
You should buy the S90 if: You seek a premium saloon prioritising comfort and refinement, value elegant design and minimalist interiors, or appreciate Volvo's safety-focused philosophy over sportiness.
Consider alternatives if: You want dynamic handling comparable to a BMW 5 Series, desire powerful engines, or require intuitive infotainment systems.
Competitive Position: The Volvo S90 (2016-present) is a compelling alternative in the premium large saloon segment, offering a unique identity that sets it apart from conventional German rivals. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on expert rating and overall score, the S90 matches or exceeds user satisfaction and offers superior value with 40.7% good or great deals available. Unlike the 5 Series's dynamic focus, the S90 competes through elegance, refinement, and comfort, making it ideal for buyers seeking a different approach to premium motoring. Its minimalist interior, exceptional build quality, and flexible powertrain options provide genuine alternatives to the E-Class and A6, though those prioritising sportiness should consider the 5 Series instead.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)I have been patiently waiting for the right executive car at the right price and my list was Mercs E class, BMW 5series, and Audi A6 the Volvo was added to my list much later. I was pleased with the reviews and good value. I made a viewing and test drive appointment on seeing the car on the forecourt I immediately fell for its good looks and excellent features, lovely interiors comfortable seats and good MPG for such large vehicle.
I gave had an S90 D4 R Design for 2 years and have found it overall a very good car, excellent economy and handles well for a big car. I have just swapped it for an Inscription D4 now where normally I would change for another make.
