Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a five-door hatchback that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It offers an upmarket look and feel, with a plush interior and smart styling that sets it apart from typical family hatchbacks. Launched in 2012 with a mid-life facelift in 2016, the V40 is available in various trim levels, from basic ES to sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country variants. Production ended in 2019 with no direct replacement, as Volvo shifted focus to larger vehicles.
Safety is a standout feature, with impressive equipment and a reassuring, solid driving experience ideal for long journeys. The engine range is excellent, offering fuel-efficient diesel options (D2 and D3 achieving 60-65mpg and 55mpg respectively) and economical petrol variants (T2 around 45mpg). However, the V40 is average to drive, with uninspiring handling and an unsettled ride, particularly on larger-wheeled models. The rear is cramped with a modest 335-litre boot, and service costs lean towards premium pricing. Most engines require timing belt replacement every six years or 87,500 miles.
Best for: Safety-conscious buyers, those seeking an upmarket alternative to mainstream hatchbacks, and drivers prioritising fuel efficiency with diesel engines.
Not ideal for: Those wanting engaging driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or modern hybrid and electric options.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.8% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 40.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: Safety is your priority, you seek an upmarket alternative to mainstream hatchbacks, or you want fuel-efficient diesel engines with impressive equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, maximum interior space, or modern hybrid and electric options.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a distinctive choice in the premium hatchback segment, offering excellent safety credentials and a plush interior. However, it falls short against rivals like the Volkswagen Golf, which is a more talented all-rounder with better driving dynamics. The BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 offer superior handling and premium appeal, though the V40 remains an interesting and underrated alternative. Its cramped rear and modest boot capacity are notable drawbacks, but the impressive engine range and safety features make it appealing to buyers prioritising security and efficiency over driving excitement.

4.5 Overall rating
(13 reviews)Customers say
The Volvo V40, particularly the 2019 model, is appreciated by owners for its stylish design and extensive features, making it a visually appealing option. However, there are concerns about reliability, specifically with clutches, which can be expensive to fix. While many find the value to be good, its discontinuation raises some doubts. Overall, drivers enjoy how it looks and the driving experience, but some aspects of usability, like the navigation system and controls, received criticism.

It's a lovely car to drive, 2L engine makes it quite powerful for motorway driving. Very comfortable seats and half leather trim. Kids are very happy to have their own cup holders I the back.
Fun and suprisingly nimble despite its age and size, very comfortable and despite age still fairly well equipped.
