Volvo V90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable on long journeys | Not all that exciting to drive |
| Superb safety equipment | A Mercedes, BMW or Audi feels more premium |
| Spacious and practical boot | Diesels powerful but gruff-sounding |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a premium estate car that prioritises comfort, practicality, and style. With 560 litres of boot space (expanding to 1,526 litres with seats folded), it rivals the Audi A6 Avant whilst offering a more modern aesthetic than traditional estates. The cabin is spacious and luxurious, with a clean design typical of modern Volvo. Safety is paramount, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and City Safety autonomous emergency braking fitted as standard across the range.
Engine options have evolved significantly since launch, moving from diesel-focused to a diverse range including petrol, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. The D4 diesel offers the best real-world fuel economy at around 45mpg, whilst petrol engines are quieter but thirstier at approximately 30mpg. The V90 excels on long journeys, delivering comfort and refinement, though it prioritises ease over driving engagement. Insurance groups range from 27 to 43, and early models may avoid the £325 annual premium tax if purchased under £40,000 originally.
Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, practical premium estate car for long-distance travel, those prioritising safety and luxury, and buyers wanting excellent build quality and cabin design.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling dynamics, those wanting a car that feels more premium than competitors, or buyers sensitive to diesel engine noise during acceleration.

The Verdict
You should buy the V90 if: You're seeking a comfortable, practical premium estate car for long-distance travel, prioritising safety and luxury, or wanting excellent build quality and cabin design.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling dynamics, want a car that feels more premium than competitors, or are sensitive to diesel engine noise during acceleration.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a strong contender in the premium estate car segment, offering exceptional comfort, practicality, and safety. Whilst the BMW 5 Series Touring edges ahead for driving dynamics and the Mercedes E-Class Estate provides more boot space, the V90 delivers superior comfort for long journeys and excellent value. The Audi A6 Avant offers comparable practicality with a more premium feel, but the V90's spacious cabin, luxurious design, and comprehensive safety features make it an outstanding choice for families prioritising comfort and reliability over sportiness.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Best car I've owned. Comfortable, smooth ride, spacious and easy driving.
I had a Volvo v90, and foolishly downsized to a small people carrier. I soon realised my mistake and have now repurchased my Volvo V90 inscription, which will stay with me. Its comfortable, spacious, economical on fuel and has all bells.
