The Volvo XC60 has garnered a strong reputation across its model years for its quality build, comfort, and performance. Many owners appreciate its generous interior space and safety features, often comparing it favorably against competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Drivers particularly enjoy the economical fuel efficiency and well-equipped interiors, although some do express concerns about the high maintenance costs and the vehicle’s price relative to others in its class. Overall, the XC60 is seen as a stylish and practical choice for those seeking a luxury SUV experience.

It's a good workhorse and a good luxury car that is brilliant for a family. The AWD was important to get around in bad weather

The XC60 is a wonderful car for touring and the longer distances. The seats are very comfortable and you get a god all round view of other road users. The 2.4 engine is flexible and will give around 40-45 MPG; the 2.0 litre is much more economical and has a lower road tax.

Volvo XC60 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Looks classy both inside and out | No seven-seat option |
| Efficient petrol and plug-in hybrid engines | Not exciting to drive |
| A very practical family vehicle | Pricier than many similarly sized SUVs |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC60 is a premium mid-size SUV that has established itself as one of the world's best-selling models in its class. The 2025 update brings a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with faster software, improved sound insulation, and refined styling, whilst maintaining the clean, minimalist Scandinavian interior that defines the model. With a choice of efficient B5 mild-hybrid, T6 plug-in hybrid, and T8 plug-in hybrid powertrains, the XC60 offers strong performance alongside respectable fuel economy. The cabin features high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces, and real metal trim that rival premium competitors like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
The XC60 excels as a long-distance companion, offering one of the smoothest rides in its class with impressive wind and tyre noise insulation. Practicality is strong with 483 litres of boot space (468 litres in PHEV versions), a 60:40 split rear seat, and a ski hatch for longer loads. Whilst it lacks the sportiness of some rivals and doesn't offer a seven-seat option, its easygoing nature, luxurious feel, and family-friendly design make it an upmarket, cosseting choice for those prioritising comfort and refinement over driving excitement.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, comfortable family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, those valuing long-distance refinement and smooth ride quality, and families wanting efficient hybrid powertrains.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling, those needing seven seats, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value over premium positioning.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.8% | 4.5/5 |

| Mercedes-Benz GLC | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 35.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XC60 if: You're seeking a premium, comfortable family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, value long-distance refinement and smooth ride quality, or want efficient hybrid powertrains.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, need seven seats, or are seeking value over premium positioning.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC60 is a strong contender in the premium mid-size SUV segment, offering a distinctive Scandinavian approach to luxury that sets it apart from German rivals. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz GLC leads on user satisfaction, the XC60 holds its own with a compelling blend of refinement, efficiency, and understated elegance. It may not match the X3's sportiness or offer the GLC's flexibility, but its superior ride comfort, innovative hybrid engines, and cosseting interior make it an excellent choice for those prioritising long-distance comfort and premium feel over driving excitement.
