Volvo XC60 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Looks classy both inside and out | No seven-seat option |
| Efficient petrol and plug-in hybrid engines | Not exciting to drive |
| A very practical family vehicle | Pricier than many similarly sized SUVs |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC60 is a premium mid-size SUV that has established itself as one of the world's best-selling models in its class. The second-generation XC60, launched in 2017 and updated for 2025, represents Volvo's successful repositioning as a premium, SUV-led brand capable of competing with Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The 2025 facelift brings a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with faster software, improved sound insulation, and refined styling, whilst maintaining the clean, minimalist Scandinavian cabin that defines the model's appeal.
The XC60 excels in ride comfort and long-distance refinement, with a suspension tuned for smoothness rather than sportiness. The modern engine line-up features a 2.0-litre petrol with electrification across all versions: the B5 mild-hybrid (247bhp), T6 plug-in hybrid (346bhp), and range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid (451bhp). Practicality is strong with 483 litres of boot space, spacious rear legroom, and a 60:40 split-folding rear seat. Running costs are competitive for the class, with the B5 achieving around 35mpg in real-world driving, whilst plug-in hybrids offer electric range of up to 50 miles when fully charged.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, comfortable family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, those prioritising ride comfort and refinement on long journeys, and families wanting efficient hybrid technology.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting a sporty, engaging SUV, those requiring seven seats, or budget-conscious buyers seeking the most affordable option in the premium SUV segment.

The Verdict
You should buy the XC60 if: You seek a premium, comfortable family SUV with distinctive Scandinavian design, prioritise ride refinement and long-distance comfort, or want efficient hybrid technology with practical family space.
Consider alternatives if: You desire a sporty, engaging driving experience, require seven seats, or want the most affordable option in the premium SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC60 is a strong contender in the premium mid-size SUV market, offering a distinctive blend of Scandinavian luxury, comfort, and practicality. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and the Mercedes-Benz GLC offers slightly more boot space, the XC60 stands out for its refined interior, efficient hybrid engines, and exceptional ride quality. It's the ideal choice for buyers who value understated elegance and long-distance comfort over sportiness, making it a compelling alternative to its German rivals for those seeking a more relaxed, cosseting driving experience.

The Volvo XC60 has garnered a strong reputation across its model years for its quality build, comfort, and performance. Many owners appreciate its generous interior space and safety features, often comparing it favorably against competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Drivers particularly enjoy the economical fuel efficiency and well-equipped interiors, although some do express concerns about the high maintenance costs and the vehicle’s price relative to others in its class. Overall, the XC60 is seen as a stylish and practical choice for those seeking a luxury SUV experience.

What people say
The XC60 is a wonderful car for touring and the longer distances. The seats are very comfortable and you get a god all round view of other road users. The 2.4 engine is flexible and will give around 40-45 MPG; the 2.0 litre is much more economical and has a lower road tax.
Most other cars will be lucky to make it to 150000 miles. The Volvo is DESIGNED. to do 300 thousand. Keep it serviced and you will never need any other car.
R Line. Superb car providing comfort, performance, good running costs. Cannot fault this car
The specification of the engine is ideal and it is one of the most economic engines for its size. Ideal for towing if required and easy on the fuel on a journey. Re-setting the clock is the only gripe I have so I leave it alone! The only other car I would chose is the Honda CRV but this has less leg room for taller persons.
Quality build great comfort and great mpg and cheap tax
