BMW 1 Series 2026 review | Still the best family car for those who love driving

Pros and cons
What we like
Great to drive
Plushly trimmed interior
Undercuts rivals on price
What to consider
Practicality could be better
Key equipment items cost extra
Ergonomically inferior to its predecessor
The CarGurus verdict
The fourth-generation BMW 1 Series is a thoroughly appropriate evolution of what’s gone before, and to be fair, what’s gone before has been enormously successful. Okay, BMW purists might spit their tea at the fact it’s no longer rear-wheel drive - blame the third-generation 1 Series for that change - but it’s still excellent to drive. The interior is gorgeous and, compared with premium hatchback rivals, even the prices look pretty good.
There are gripes. The rather derivative looks won’t be to everyone’s taste, the ergonomics have taken a significant backwards step, practicality is limited, and you have to pay extra for some items of equipment that should really be standard. However, overall the 1 Series is a very compelling choice.

What owners say
Looks good and works well in general. The scoring is inconsistent and the sort order is not always correct with cars outside of the filter sometimes returned.
21 January 2026Love my 1 series sport. Fairly nippy and a lovely smooth drive. Rear parking sensors are a god send. Good on diesel, especially on long motorway journeys. Only thing missing is heated front seats. I know you can get them in some models but would be nice to have as standard when your paying top dollar. Otherwise would highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice smooth drive with good MPG.
14 August 2023Excellent features and great condition, everything was like new, previous owners have taken great care both, inside and out. I have looked at several other 1 series and this one knocks them out of the water. The car is just missing the weather!!

22 December 2022great car, quite responsive engine a diesel with this horse power. Good feel from steering. Good handling, goes just were you want it as quick as you want . solid well built car with its own style.
14 June 2021The car pricing is average to its competitors, with the driving experience, being comfortable and the car grips and moves really well, ride height and comfort is really good, it is a BMW after-all, plenty of storage space and functions available, the car price is spot on. I have all available packages on my variant 116D M Sport Pro, the only two extras i didnt have installed were the towbar and panoramic roof. The car features and used daily by myself are the HUD (heads up display) which is superb, and easy, to use, heated steering wheel and heated seats are easy and fast reacting, and just the right temperature. Electric memory seats work really well with forward/backward, upward/downward support along with back lumber support and leg support, all easily adjustable and has profile saving available. Cruise control and media function buttons on the steering wheel are really easy and simple to use, the response from the buttons in general is quick and shows no delay. The infotainment screen is as big as you could possibly need it, its responsive and has a circular dial scroll and multiple buttons to easily navigate, the menu is simple to use ,understand and get around. Theres buttons for simple and easy temperature control along with multiple auto control features. Door pocket storage is really good and two cup holders with wireless charging is really well manufactured with plenty of space. I dont know if its possible for a 1 series to have, but this car would benefit from heated mirrors and next lane control assistance. It has lane control which works really well and easily adjustable for whats in front of you. Automatic boot opening feature is really responsive and works great, multiple ways to use this feature whether its by key press, button by drivers seat, or swiping your foot under the rear bumper, with button for auto closing and you can set up how much to open the door for when in tight spaces. The car comes with some ambient lighting internally which works great and has different functions, easy to adjust, but would benefit with a full scale trim lighting rather than the current set up of half dash board and doors only.
27 February 2024Great characterful engine which is economical too! Handles well as a bonus.
13 April 2022The latest 1 series is certainly a good competent car. Having picked up an M135i yesterday to replace a three year old 125i the differences are: More noise in the 135 and particularly road roar. A feeling that the materials are all lighter and slightly less durable. The tech has certainly jumped forwards but the switchgear has not. After day one of ownership I would say it’s different for sure, A better car? That depends what you cherish. The new model is very - very fast in 135 spec, but the overall “feel”, the previous car was frankly ahead. The piped engine sound in the new 135 is, well err, embarrassing. But you can opt to turn it off. I guess the BMW engineers realised it needed the ‘off’ option!
10 July 2021Beautiful car, 3 door 118d M Sport Shadow Edition. Smooth and comfortable drive, 2.0 litre 148bhp and manual 6 speed perfect combination providing great mpg.
12 June 2022A very strong engineer and pulls like a train. However, the stereo is not the best.
11 February 2023A great around car. Very smooth nicer than our Audi a4
7 May 2023Three things to know
- You expect any new car these days to come with a decent slice of driver assistance measures, and the slice you get from the 1 Series is decent, but no more than that. Your car comes with a Driving Assistant that includes front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, exit warning, traffic sign recognition, and a parking assistant.
- More sophisticated safety systems are available, of course, but they must be added as optional extras at extra cost. If you want adaptive cruise control, you have to add an expensive pack that also includes steering and lane control assist, and automatic speed limit assist. Elsewhere on the options list, you can also specify a system that allows you to park the car using your phone as a remote control.
- If you want an even racier character from your M135, you can specify something called the M Dynamic Package at additional cost. This brings revised suspension hardware such as stiffer stabiliser brackets front and rear, specifically tuned dampers, and stiffer piston rods. You also get increased body bracing, lightweight wheels and upgraded brakes taken from the BMW M3/M4. We haven’t tried this, though, so we don’t know what effect it has.
Which one to buy
- For the majority: We thank that most potential 1 Series customers will be more than happy with the entry-level engine choice, the 120 petrol. It’s eager and free-revving for very adequate progress, and it’s quiet when you want it to be, but makes a nice noise when you’re feeling more playful. Economy isn’t bad, either.
- For sporty looks: If you want your car to have a sporty attitude, but aren’t fussed about having the performance to back it up, then simply stick with the 120 petrol engine, but specify it in M Sport trim. This brings racy styling touches inside and out, along with bigger alloy wheels and an adaptive sports suspension. We actually reckon that the 120 M Sport is probably the sweet spot of the entire range.
- For the performance driver: It has to be the M135, the fastest 1 Series of the bunch. It’s not as ballistically fast as some of the hyper-hatch options offered by Audi and Mercedes-AMG, but there’s more than enough clout to put a smile on your face, and is a very worthy adversary to a Volkswagen Golf R.
- For the company car driver: If we’re honest, company car drivers will probably want to give the 1 Series a wide berth, because the very limited level of electrification means that Benefit-in-Kind tax bills will be steep on all versions. You’ll be better off considering a rival with plug-in hybrid tech, or better still, a zero-emission fully electric powertrain.
