Hyundai i20 (2014-2020) review | Practical, excellent-value hatchback

Pros and cons
What we like
Very good value for money
Five-year warranty gives peace of mind
Lots of space for people and luggage
What to consider
Not as much fun to drive as some rivals
Slightly bland styling
Pre-facelift autos are a little clunky
The CarGurus verdict
The CarGurus verdict
This second-generation Hyundai i20 makes a seriously strong case for itself, thanks to the space it offers and, particularly with post-facelift cars, the amount of standard equipment. While no version is particularly interesting to drive, every i20 is capable and inoffensive.
It’s best to avoid the earlier S models, as they really did come with a low standard specification, but post-2018 facelifted cars all gained some desirable upgrades, most notably air conditioning and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto phone connectivity. They’re economical as well, not only when it comes to fuel, but all running costs, while the styling and cabin are neatly designed and should age well. The i20 was a good buy when new, and it’s an even better one as a used car.

What owners say
Good light worker, efficient, affordable, good value. Has some go in the higher revs should it be needed.
6 December 2024Great to drive, nippy but solid, easy connectivity to phone etc
23 January 2022I know that it is known as quite boxy especially inside but the 2010 version rather than the 2009 seemed well thought through and it looked great for its value on the outside. Such a reliable vehicle but I needed to have taken a bit more care over the bumps etc.
12 October 2023Three things to know
- Don’t be confused by Hyundai’s ‘T-GDi’ badging on i20 engines; the ‘D’ doesn’t stand for diesel, as you might imagine. Instead, it translates to ‘Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection’. The MPi is the other type of petrol engine, which stands for ‘Multi Point Injection’, while the diesels are labelled as CRDi, or ‘Common Rail Diesel Injection’. The diesels are quite rare in comparison to petrol engines, though, and were unavailable after the 2018 facelift.
- As part of this update, the i20 got a mild makeover that included niceties like revised lighting and better standard equipment – including air conditioning, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for all models. Hyundai also introduced a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to the range. This allowed those who prefer a two-pedal automatic to have one without any penalty in fuel consumption (in contrast to the ancient four-speed automatic). The new transmission achieved the same fuel economy in T-GDi 99bhp guise as the five-speed manual gearbox.
- The i20 Coupe was the basis of Hyundai’s incredible World Rally Championship contender between 2017 and 2021. Packing a 380bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, all-wheel drive and wild aerodynamics, it racked up 17 race wins. Sadly, there was no trickle-down effect to the road cars. Keen drivers had to wait until an all-new i20 was launched in 2020 – complete with a hot i20N version.
Which one to buy
- If you want something cheap and cheerful: Not everyone wants air conditioning and more than a pair of speakers to play Radio 4 through, right? If that’s the case, a pre-facelift i20 in S trim will suit you perfectly, because it relies on the windows for ventilation and only has a basic audio system.
- If you’re image-conscious: That’ll be the pre-facelift Active. The world has gone mad for SUVs and crossovers, so Hyundai gave customers something a little bit SUV-like with the Active trim. It has some additional plastic body cladding, including ‘skid plates’ on the front and rear bumpers, roof bars and a 20mm increase in ride height. Easy as it is to mock these pseudo-crossovers, all of that scuff-resistant plastic is a boon for urban drivers, helping the car to shrug off parking knocks a bit better. The jacked-up suspension makes getting in and out easier as well, although the ride is firmer than in standard models.
- If you cover a lot of miles: The days of superminis being mere second cars are long gone, especially if yours is as big and accommodating as the i20. If you’re using it for regular long journeys, seek out a diesel. The easier, low-rev flexibility thanks to their greater torque – particularly the 1.4-litre engine – make for a capable and very economical choice if you’re winding big miles onto the odometer. That said, a later 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol will be very economical on long drives too, and arguably better if you balance weekend adventures with day-to-day work around a town or city.
- If you want an automatic transmission: The manual gearbox in the i20 is light and crisp enough in its shift that it’s not really a chore. Still, if you’re city-bound and often stuck in traffic, the post-facelift seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the one to have. It’s smooth and quite quick at changing ratios, whereas the pre-facelift four-speed auto is worse in every respect. Later cars also gained stop-start technology, so you won’t be sitting in queues with the engine running, either.
