Toyota Yaris Cross 2026 review | A thoroughly sensible small crossover

Pros and cons
What we like
The hybrid sips fuel, especially around town
Promises the first-rate reliability you'd expect of Toyota
Lots of boot space for a small car
What to consider
Quite cramped in the back
The 4x4 version has less luggage room
Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma
The CarGurus verdict
If the idea of a compact SUV appeals to you, and low running costs, hybrid efficiency and Toyota reliability are key priorities, then the Yaris Cross has plenty going for it. If, however, driving involvement, versatility or ride comfort are more important, it doesn’t fare as well as some of the other options in this crowded part of the car market.
Having said that, the Yaris Cross is good enough in all of these areas that it doesn’t embarrass itself. While it isn’t particularly cheap to buy, it’s very cost-effective to run, and Toyota’s warranty provides a welcome dose of reassurance. Not an outstanding all-rounder, then, but a good one. If you’re after a lofty small car, we reckon the Yaris Cross should be on your shortlist.

What owners say
The car is of a good value. Everything seems to work well except the automatic parking functionality.
17 November 2025Heads up option. I like the hybrid recharging and don't want a battery only car.Long journeys mean recharging. I like the driving position of an SUV and dont need the size of my RAV 4 still!
19 December 2025I like the AWD version though I think all of the hybrid cars in SUV form are expensive and I will wait before changing my diesel RAV AWD.
4 December 2025Three things to know
- If you like the idea of a Yaris Cross but would prefer a more upmarket badge and a plusher interior, try the Lexus LBX instead. It uses a variation of the same GA-B small car platform, but with a more premium interior and a more polished, Lexus-like feel.
- Most compact SUVs of this size are strictly front-wheel drive. Unusually, the Yaris Cross is available with Toyota’s AWD-i all-wheel-drive system on selected versions. This has been achieved by adding an extra electric motor to the rear axle, which means there’s no conventional mechanical propshaft. The advantage of this setup is that it’s light and compact, so the AWD-i version isn’t much less efficient than the standard car. There are disadvantages, though: it isn’t the most rugged four-wheel-drive system, so while it’ll help you out on a slippery road or a muddy track, it won’t be able to tackle serious off-roading. For that, you’ll need something more rugged.
- It's widely known that Euro NCAP tests get tougher over time, and the Yaris Cross is a good example of how standards move on. It achieved the full five-star rating when it was tested in 2021, but when it was retested under newer protocols in 2025, it received four stars. That doesn’t suddenly make it unsafe, especially given the amount of standard safety kit Toyota includes, but it does show how quickly the independent safety body’s requirements evolve.
Which one to buy
- The most sensible Yaris Cross to choose is no longer quite as clear-cut as simply picking the cheapest version. The entry-level Icon is well equipped, and if you want the lowest possible price, it still makes a lot of sense. However, the step up to Design adds useful extras such as a larger touchscreen, 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, LED projector headlights, rear privacy glass and roof rails. We think it’s worth considering.
- Better still, Design is available with the more powerful 129bhp hybrid system, and that looks like the sweet spot in the range. It gives you a useful equipment upgrade over Icon and a small but worthwhile performance boost, without pushing the price up to Excel or GR Sport levels.
- If you want to push the boat out and spec your Yaris Cross up a bit, we’d suggest going for the Excel. It costs quite a bit more than the Design, but you do get an awful lot more equipment, including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, an electric tailgate, blind-spot monitoring, safe exit assist and a panoramic view monitor.
