Quick Summary
The Range Rover Velar (2017-present) is a stylish and sophisticated mid-size premium SUV that sits between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. Launched in 2017 and updated in 2023, it offers buyers an appealing blend of luxury, comfort, and capability in a more accessible package than its larger counterparts. The Velar boasts a spacious 632-litre boot, excellent front-seat accommodation with 14-way electrically adjustable seats, and a refined driving experience with smooth engines and responsive steering. The 2023 facelift introduced an improved infotainment system with the new Pivi Pro interface, making it more user-friendly than earlier models.
The Velar's engine range includes efficient diesel options delivering around 40mpg, mild-hybrid variants, and a plug-in hybrid P400e with up to 40 miles of electric-only range. All models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with Land Rover's Terrain Response system, offering genuine off-road capability. However, potential buyers should be aware of the Velar's iffy reliability record and high running costs, including insurance and VED premiums. Top-spec models can be expensive, and rivals like the Porsche Macan offer sharper handling, whilst the BMW X5 provides more rear-seat space.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped premium SUV with genuine off-road credentials and a refined driving experience, particularly those who value the Range Rover brand and elegant design.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising sharp handling and driving dynamics, buyers concerned about reliability, or those seeking the best value in the premium SUV segment or maximum rear-seat space.

| Range Rover Velar | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Velar if: You value stylish design, refined comfort, and genuine off-road capability, and you're willing to accept potential reliability concerns in exchange for a prestigious Range Rover ownership experience.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling and driving dynamics, seek maximum reliability, require excellent rear-seat space, or want the best value in the premium SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Range Rover Velar is an appealing and well-equipped premium SUV that delivers on style, comfort, and refinement. However, it faces stiff competition from rivals that often outperform it in key areas. The BMW X5 offers superior expert ratings and more rear-seat space, whilst the Porsche Macan provides sharper driving dynamics at a competitive price. The Audi Q5 also delivers strong value and reliability. The Velar's main strengths lie in its distinctive styling, luxurious interior, and genuine off-road credentials, making it an excellent choice for buyers who prioritise these qualities over outright performance or value. Its reliability concerns and high running costs remain significant considerations.

4.7 Overall rating
(8 reviews)My 2021 Range Rover R-Dynamic P400e Velar SE performs magnificently on all terrains and in all weathers. The in-line turbocharged 4-cylibder 2.0 litre engine, combined with its rear axled electric motor provides a 400bhp punch. Driving the vehicle is a joy, the Velars exterior looks the part, bronze copper trimming from bonnet mounted air intakes, extenuating under the wing mirrors via the front wheel panels onto the the 2-front doors is pure class. The aerodynamics are aesthetic with thedoor handles conceal themselves into the vehicle on locking or driving off. The rear top fender, not only looks great, its purpose is to actually prevent wind resistance. The interior matches the vehicles exterior..brilliant. Mine is a twin-screened mount and its digital graphics or sharp 3-D images. The smooth leather bound steering wheel is class and its function buttons are easy-accessed. The ebony veneer with the silver metal that lines the counselling is gorgeous. The seats are a master class in comfort and build, the carpeting is rich too. A large boot, my Velar has it all. I would highly recommend any prospective buyer, considering a large luxurious PHEV, with good fuel economy, combined with performance, to go ahead and look the Velar P400e over.
